The kW. This is the unit that measures electrical power
Kilowatts represent the amount of power an electrical appliance needs to operate. For example, a refrigerator needs 0.35 kW and a dishwasher 2.2 kW.
Every home, office or other building has a specific amount of power contracted that should be equivalent to that required by its electrical appliances. That is why it is very important to know how much power is really needed as it will ensure that our bills are not too high.
"Knowing how much power is needed will mean that our bills are not too high.”
The kWh. The electricity you consume in an hour
This means the amount of energy used in an hour and is the unit of measurement used by the energy sector to establish the cost of our consumption. This quantity is measured by a meter. It is therefore necessary for each supply point to have an associated meter installed, something that the distribution company is responsible for.
"The kW represents the power that a device needs to work and the kWh the amount of energy that is used in an hour.”
The kW and kWh in the energy bill
While the kW on your bill indicates the amount paid for the contracted power, the kWh refers to the cost of total energy consumed.
Do you know how it is calculated? It's very simple.
In the case of kW, the amount to be paid is the result of multiplying the contracted power by the price of the kW, taking into account that each kW costs five euros.
As for kWh, multiply the established price of kWh by the total kWh consumed during the billing period in question.
Now that you know all this, how can you reduce your electricity bill?
Understanding the difference between kW and kWh is the first step in choosing a rate. The second step is to work out which of the two options that the energy market offers is best for you:
Fixed per kWh price tariff
The main advantage of this tariff is that you know in advance what you are going to pay on your bill, regardless of when you use electricity.
The key to saving money? Decide on a rate that offers you a low price per kWh.
Time-of-use tariff
This tariff charges different rates depending on the time that you use the electricity. It generally distinguishes two time bands, one of which is known as "off-peak", the cheapest in other words.
This option is for you if you keep to an established routine that allows you to control when you consume more energy and when you are normally away from home.
Choose a rate with a fixed price per kWh if you want to know in advance what you are going to pay, or a time-of-use tariff if you keep to an established schedule.
If you are not sure, your supplier will be glad to advise you
Everybody is different and what you need today might not be the same as what you will need tomorrow. Therefore, if the calculations seem difficult but you still want to save money, take the advise of a professional from your energy company. You are sure to find the rate that best suits you.
There are also formulas that allow you to reduce your consumption, making more efficient use of your appliances. For example, did you know that depending on the washing machine programme you choose you will use more or less energy and that the number of times you open the fridge increases energy expenditure? Or that keeping the thermostat at a maximum of 22 degrees you will have a comfortable environment with moderate consumption?
If you manage to combine a rate that suits you with an efficient and responsible consumption of energy, congratulations. Your bill and your pocket will see the results.
