- The first edition will have 50 students, 80% women, who will receive 200 hours of theory and practical training. Attendees will be able to acquire the necessary knowledge to be able to carry out dismantling tasks such as those planned in the Litoral thermal power plant.
- This training plan aims to promote local employment and is carried out in collaboration with the Andalusian Employment Service and the City Council of Carboneras.
Endesa is launching today its first dismantlement courses, taught in the Almeria municipality of Carboneras. This first class was attended by 50 students, 80% women, who will receive 200 hours of theory and practical training on the process of dismantling a thermal power plant such as Litoral.
This training plan, aimed at residents in the area surrounding the Litoral thermal power plant, is carried out in collaboration with the Andalusian Employment Service and the City Council of Carboneras. Its main goal is to create new job opportunities after the plant closes. This initiative is part of Endesa's commitment to Carboneras and the province of Almeria, to promote the creation of jobs in the region with specialised labour training.
The mayor of Carboneras, Jose Luis Amérigo, has welcomed the students to this first edition, where 112 applications were received for the 50 planned places. The students were selected as per the criteria set out in the training agreement between the Andalusian Employment Service, the City Council of Carboneras and Endesa: priority is given to former workers registered in the fair transition job pool of Carboneras, prepared by the Instituto de Transición Justa, unemployed individuals from Carboneras and the rest of the province of Almeria, and women.
This first training course for the dismantling of thermal power plants lasts 200 hours and is taught in premises made available by the City Council of Carboneras. It is divided into theory classes, where students will acquire the necessary tools to then apply in the practical classes.
The training plan is split into four modules: basic workplace risk prevention in construction (60 hours), first aid (20 hours), demolition work (43 hours) and complementary training (77 hours). Students are offered comprehensive training in all the subjects needed to complete the work correctly.
This training course is part of the Futur-e plan developed by the company and which aims to promote local employment in plant dismantlement and the installation of renewable plants, a booming sector that will also play an important role in the area. Endesa is planning to build around 1,200 megawatts of renewable power, mainly photovoltaic, in the province of Almeria, which will replace the 1,159 megawatts of power generated by the Litoral thermal power plant.
This new capacity will entail an investment of around 1,200 million euros and the creation of more than 2,000 equivalent jobs during construction and 400 in the operation and maintenance phase. This is why training courses in "solar panel mounting" and "operation and maintenance of wind and solar plants" have been scheduled. These courses will be delivered to around 200 people in several rounds.
Finally, technical training in sectors with potential is planned. This is aimed at around 100 people from the vicinity of the plant and its content will be finalised by the monitoring committee for the training agreement, taking into account, inter alia, the projects resulting from the international competition organised under the Futur-e Plan.
Futur-e Plan
The Futur-e Litoral Plan is an Endesa project that seeks to help to mitigate the impact that the closure of this plant may have on the local population through 4 axes: a proactive search for employment; promoting economic activity in the area; training in skills for the local population; and sustainability initiatives within the municipality.
The assessment committee for the Futur-e Project International Competition formed by Carboneras City Council, the Andalusian regional government, the Instituto para la Transición Justa at the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the University of Almeria, the Port Authority and Endesa is still analysing the 14 proposals selected in November 2021.
In addition, there are also plans to develop more than 1,200 MW of renewable capacity in Almeria, which will replace the capacity of this plant, and the training plans presented.
