Plant dismantling

The Litoral thermal power plant was located in the municipality of Carboneras (Almería), 67 km from the city of Almería.

The dismantling works, which are based on following circular economy principles and prioritise donating various materials and equipment from the plant to local organisations, are being carried out by a specialised local company and will be completed in 2026. These works have prioritised the hiring of local staff, which has accounted for between 50% and 70% of the workforce throughout the dismantling period.

Energy transition plan

The plan has focused on seeking projects that enable economic and industrial development on the power plant's land following its closure, as well as on training the plant's personnel and workers from the surrounding area.

Promoting training in renewables in the surrounding area, as well as in power plant dismantling and in sectors with development potential to improve employability. This training, consisting of 10 courses, has allowed more than 300 local workers to take advantage of employment opportunities in the dismantling of the thermal power plant, which has already been ongoing for four years, and in other promising sectors that may develop alongside the new business projects.

This initiative, which is innovative in Spain, reflects our commitment to carrying out a just energy transition that entails replacing the generation capacity of coal-fired power plants with clean, renewable technologies, as well as generating wealth and employment by developing industrial projects that meet social and environmental sustainability criteria.
