Futur-e in Litoral
The Futur-e plan for the Litoral thermal power plant (Carboneras, Almería) includes the development of renewable energy projects and a call for an international contest to find new industrial projects that will promote economic reactivation and employment in the area.
The plant
The Litoral thermal power plant is located in the municipality of Carboneras (Almería), 67 km from Almería. On 16 December, we disconnected the main generation equipment at the plant after this iconic infrastructure had been in operation for nearly four decades. During its useful life it produced 183,628 gigawatt hours (GWh), equivalent to the electricity consumption of Andalusia for 4 and a half years.
The plant is currently being dismantled by a local specialised company. This process is applying the principles of circular economy, so donations of different materials from the plant are being made to entities in the area.
Futur-e Plan
The disconnection of the plant went hand-in-hand a future plan, Futur-e, on which we had been working for several years, just like in the rest of the infrastructures in the process of closing down. This plan includes the launch of an international contest to search for projects that enable economic and industrial development on the land occupied by the plants once their closure has become a reality.
This unique initiative in Spain is in response to our commitment to undertaking fair energy transition that involves replacing the generation capacity of coal-fired plants with clean and renewable technologies, as well as the generation of wealth and employment through the development of industrial projects that meet social and environmental sustainability criteria.
The tender
The international tender for projects for Litoral has received 14 binding proposals submitted by 10 different promoters which address topics relating to the circular economy, aquaculture, biofuels, tourism and logistics. A roundtable of experts involving all the entities is analysing the feasibility of each project with an eye on the area's future.
Parallel to these tenders, we are studying renewable projects that will enable the replacement of coal-fired generation by 100% green energy.
In the media
We have participated in a number of meetings and round tables on economic reactivation in Almeria and the Futur-e Coastal Plan.
