- Endesa has also located its two international benchmark projects to bring forward meeting the challenges of sustainable cities by 25 years: eCitySevilla and eCityMálaga, in the PCT Cartuja and Málaga TechPark science and technology parks.
The President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno, and the Chief Executive Officer of Endesa, José Bogas, held a meeting today at the Palacio de San Telmo to strengthen alliances and monitor the projects that Endesa is developing in the territory, as well as to share information on short- and medium-term investments aimed at accelerating energy transition within the territory.
During the meeting, which was also attended by the Minister of Industrial Policy and Energy, Jorge Paradela, the Endesa's General Manager of Institutional Relations and Regulation, José Casas, and Endesa's General Manager in Andalusia, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla, Rafael Sánchez Durán, the Chief Executive Officer of Endesa had the opportunity to ratify the company's commitment to the territory. whose social-economic development it has supported for 128 years, through a planned investment of €3,400 million in the 2023-2025 period, to which a further €1,200 million of additional investment could be added if the Endesa project wins the tender for the Litoral fair transition.
The company employs more than 2,200 people directly and about 15,000 indirectly, making it the private company that invests the most in Andalusia to accelerate energy transition within the territory through an industrial project based on the electrification of demand by promoting renewables, the digitalising the distribution network, promoting electric mobility, offering self-consumption and energy efficiency solutions for industrial sectors and developing alternatives for the decarbonisation of cities and ports, all of which generate economic activation and employment in the region.
For José Bogas, the Chief Executive Officer of Endesa, "our company is a strategic and reliable partner, which has been providing solidity and stability to the territory for almost 130 years and aspires to continue being a key player in the region's energy transformation. With this in mind, Endesa will multiply its current rate of investments in renewable projects by 10 by 2025, which will more than triple its renewable capacity in the region, without taking into account the fair transition tender for Carboneras. We are also accelerating investments in the distribution network by 30% to adapt it to the current needs of the new model based on distributed generation and with a commitment to singular and unique projects that will position Andalusia as the engine for transition in the international sphere. All this will bring more than 8,000 new employment opportunities to the territory, as well as strong growth in the GDP."
The President of the Regional Government of Andalusia stressed that "in Endesa, Andalusia has a collaborator to help it progress and deploy basic infrastructures in the energy transformation process. The investments currently led by this company are bringing us closer to the goal of becoming a benchmark for the generation and consumption of clean energy. We have a clear commitment to sustainability and in the fight against climate change. A commitment that also involves an opportunity for the development and leadership of Andalusia."
Renewables and the shutdown of coal
Through its renewable division, Enel Green Power España, Endesa will significantly multiply its investments in renewables, planning to install 2,700 MW by 2025, for which it has 42 photovoltaic and wind projects in the pipeline, representing 2,173 new MW and some 4,500 new jobs.
This power will be in addition to a further 1,678 MW of renewable assets that have already been installed in the territory and are distributed between 48 hydroelectric plants, 13 wind farms, 8 photovoltaic plants, and 1 biomass plant, providing employment and economic development in rural areas.
With this, Endesa expects to have 3,851 MW of clean energy operating in the territory by 2025, reaching almost 4 GW of renewable capacity.
This will involve Endesa investing €1,769 million, a figure that would increase by a further €1,200 million of additional investment in renewable development if Endesa's project is a finalist in the fair transition tender for Carboneras (Almería), after the closure of the Litoral thermal power plant, which would be associated with multiple reindustrialisation projects for the area, contemplated as part of Endesa's Futur-e plan.
All these Endesa renewable energy projects, like those already executed, will be undertaken under a model of creating shared value where installations do not compete for land, but cooperate closely with the primary sector, incorporating activities such as grazing, agriculture, beekeeping and the protection of biodiversity, as well as creating new employment opportunities in the local and rural environment in both the primary sector and energy sectors.
Digitalisation of the distribution network
Through its distribution network division, e-distribución, and as a recovery plan from the post-pandemic crisis, Endesa has increased its investment plan in electricity infrastructure by 30% for the 2023-2025 period in Andalusia, which will amount to €1,200 million that will reinforce the network and create almost 3,200 new jobs. The objective of this plan is the renovation, automation and extension of the electricity distribution network to strengthen the service and meet the growing needs of the community. It will also contribute to the reactivation of the region's economy and employment by means of new dual training initiatives linked to the energy sector that have recently been launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training.
With this grid digitalisation project, Endesa aims to adapt the electricity infrastructure, based on a traditional distribution model, to make it easier to integrate renewable energies and distributed generation (self-consumption). This will provide society with a distribution network in accordance with the needs of energy transition through automation and remote control, measures that will also result in a better quality of supply.
Electric mobility
Through its electric mobility subsidiary Endesa X Way, Endesa now has more than 830 electric vehicle charging stations in Andalusia, which represents the largest market share in electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Andalusia, with almost 60%. Short-term expectations are to exceed 1,000 charging stations within the territory.
Services for the energy transition of industry
Through its business line responsible for energy efficiency, Endesa X, Endesa provides innovative solutions that support the energy transition from the point of view of consumers, companies and administrations through the electrification of energy uses and digitalisation. This involves developing initiatives for the self-generation of electricity and energy efficiency, with the aim of helping customers draw an energy roadmap leading them towards responsible and sustainable consumption.
In this regard, Endesa X is undertaking projects that will position Andalusia as a national benchmark, including the largest industrial self-consumption installation for a mining company, with Atalaya Mining, with 50 MW, and the installation of a floating solar plant for the Canal de Albolote irrigation community.
Green ports
Endesa is developing line of alliances to develop "green points" all along the Andalusia seaboard, with projects to reduce the ecological footprint left by port activity in the territory, these include an OPS Installation (On‐Shore Power Supply) in the Port of Cádiz, where the company will be the first nationwide to offer these electricity supply services to cruise ships while they are docked in order to reduce their consumption of fossil fuels and the emission of polluting particles and greenhouse gases.
Endesa is also installing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply plant at the Los Barrios port terminal, as part of its energy transition and decarbonisation strategy to reduce emissions into the atmosphere. With this project, Endesa will be the first company to offer LNG refuelling services to the more than 120,000 ships that sail through the Strait of Gibraltar every year and to the 40,000 ships that call at the Port of Algeciras, one of the main bunkering ports in the world.
eCitySevilla and eCityMálaga
Endesa is a leader in this field with two international flagship projects for sustainable, renewable cities of the future, based on the circular economy. As a model for success in public-private collaboration and together with the Regional Government of Andalusia, the PCT Cartuja and Málaga TechPark technology parks, and the city councils of Seville and Málaga, Endesa has launched eCitySevilla and eCityMálaga that aim to anticipate the challenges that cities will have to face and to do this 25 years earlier than the European Union expects, through initiatives involving the collaboration of the energy, transport, building, circular economy and waste sectors, with the support of the telecommunications sector and digitalisation.
