- Endesa's plan has already been published on the website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and includes about fifty actions which will enable total annual savings of 9.6 TWh to be achieved in primary energy consumption.
- Endesa presented this savings plan at the request of the Government when it presented the +Energy Security Plan (+SE), a contingency plan to deal with the price crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and whose main objective is to reduce energy consumption by between 5.1% and 13.5% by March 2023, as well as implementing measures that contribute to a structural reinforcement of energy security.
Endesa presented a contribution plan to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) at the request of the Government in mid-October when it presented the +Energy Security Plan (+SE) with the aim of reducing energy consumption to meet European commitments and dealing with the energy price crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine.
With this plan which included 73 measures to reduce energy consumption between 5.1% and 13% and others to contribute to a structural reinforcement of energy security, the Government included as measure number 20 an invitation to large companies to prepare and publish plans for contributing to energy saving, in which they identified saving actions involving energy efficiency and replacement by renewables that would provide greater profitability and viability in the short term.
Endesa has notified the Government of these savings commitments (information is on the MITECO website), breaking down the actions involved by their nature. A total of almost 50 actions with which the company will reduce its primary energy consumption by 9.6 TWh per year, that is, the average yearly energy consumption for one million homes. Half of them have already been implemented and the other half will be introduced between 2023 and 2025.
This plan to contribute to energy saving focusses on the following areas: The installation of self-consumption and improvements to insulation, air conditioning and lighting in corporate buildings; the continuous electrification of the fleet; reducing losses in electricity distribution; and of course, the decarbonisation of the company's generation plants.
In fact, in the latest presentation of the strategic plan, Endesa went further along the road to decarbonising the generation mix while focussing its offer on domestic and business customers, value-added services and the supply of electricity from renewable sources. Total investment contemplated in the new strategy for the Iberian Peninsula represents an increase of 15% compared to the 2022-2024 plan, reaching €8,600 million, largely as a result of acceleration in the promotion of solar plants and wind farms involving an investment of €4,300 million, 39% more than in the previous plan.
Exit from gas 10 years earlier than expected
In 2021, Endesa made a commitment to bring forward by ten years, from 2050 to 2040, the achievement of becoming a company with a totally emission-free generation mix. The definition of the 2023-2025 Strategic Plan brought about increased ambition by additionally establishing an integrated objective for the generation and retailing of electricity, so that by 2040 all electricity traded should also be emission-free. The company is accelerating the exit from the business of generation based on fossil fuels, including the sale of gas, to become a 100% renewable electricity company with no links to production technologies involving emission or fossil fuels, leading to a reduction of exterior dependence for energy. The crisis stemming from the war in Ukraine demonstrated the need to follow that path and accelerate commitments to reducing our dependence on gas.
The first step will involve the sale of the gas business for industrial customers, an operation that is expected to be closed this year, and which is an integral part of Endesa's firm commitment to the electrification of the economy.
