- A number of species of marine plants will be fed with high concentrations of CO2 from the thermal power plant in the south-east of Gran Canaria
- Endesa is working in partnership with specific research projects as part of the decarbonisation programme forming one of its goals
Endesa and Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias S.A. (ITC) have signed a collaboration agreement to develop a microalgae plant (initially for one year) as part of the Barranco de Tirajana thermal power plant facilities in Juan Grande. This is a pilot project led by ITC researchers which will use the plant's combustion gases to feed the cultivated marine plants. It will then analyse parameters such as the development and resistance of the algae and their absorption of carbon dioxide. This joint research project is part of the decarbonisation programme proposed by Endesa.
Under the agreement, Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias S.A. will be provided with an outdoor area of 90 square meters within the facilities of the Juan Grande thermal power plant. The aim is to run a pilot project in this location to test how to optimise the capture by cultivated microalgae systems of the plant's combustion gases.
Endesa has not only pledged to loan the land to the team of researchers but also provide access to a low-voltage connection point, access to the mains water supply and a seawater supply point, and access to a direct intake point from the gas flue in the chimney of the thermal power plant. The study will only use marine plants that have previously been isolated in the sea waters of Pozo Izquierdo, near Juan Grande. These microalgae grow spontaneously and naturally.
