Endesa's project to measure the internal carbon footprint was chosen as one of this year's good practices in the sixth edition of the 10+10 Business Examples #PorElClima organised by the #PorElClima Community. It is a groundbreaking initiative by the company which serves to calculate and put a price on the company's CO2 emissions, both individually and collectively.
The most innovative step is that not only will the individual impact be measured, but that, based on these emissions, each area of the company will contribute financially to a shared fund which will be used for initiatives that enable emissions to be reduced systemically: Projects to mitigate this effect and continue working together for a healthy planet with a future.
The transport and Residential, Commercial and Institutional (RCI) sectors contribute significantly to total GHG emissions in Spain (30.4% and 7.9% of total GHG emissions in 2022). For ENDESA, these are two strategic sectors in its commitment to the electrification of energy end uses and precisely through the "Internal Price of Carbon" project, actions are proposed in both sectors within the company that will reduce their corresponding emissions.
"Acting on the GHG emissions produced as a result of Endesa's daily activity enables us to demonstrate our exemplary behaviour in the electrification of society. If we are looking to be a net-zero emissions company by 2040, we all have to get involved, since the planet belongs to everyone," says Jorge Pina, Endesa's Environmental Manager.
Towards climate neutrality
The Paris Agreement establishes the need to achieve GHG emissions neutrality, the balance between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and absorption in the second half of the century.
In the fight against Climate Change, Endesa has established an ambitious roadmap towards the decarbonisation of its energy mix and has brought forward its conversion to a fully decarbonised company to 2040. This roadmap is based on a firm commitment to renewable energies, the development of a smart, flexible grid that makes it easier to implement distributed generation and the electrification of energy end uses.
Inventory of the Company's emissions
Endesa has been calculating its Carbon Footprint since 2009. The calculation of the Carbon Footprint provides essential information and transparency that helps in the management of the company's risks and opportunities with regard to Greenhouse Gases (GHG) globally and comprehensively, whilst enabling the incorporation of the "carbon component" into decision-making.
Endesa has established the operational limits for the full scope of its Carbon Footprint (CF) throughout the life cycles of each system, so the results of the Carbon Footprint include direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scopes 2 and 3) emissions, in accordance with the following classification (figure):
