Endesa, in line with its roadmap towards , aiming for environmental excellence, has been working in recent years on the total decarbonisation of its energy mix, using the latest technologies to reduce emissions at the company's generation facilities. In this regard, Endesa is ahead of the legally established deadlines and has already managed to reduce its emissions by up to 85%.
Endesa has installed catalytic reduction systems in the Canary Islands to reduce NOx emissions and wet desulphurisation systems to reduce SO2 emissions. It has also applied an innovative water injection system at the Mahón plant, using water from the city's nearby wastewater treatment plant. The aim has been to reduce NOx emissions in the turbines of this power plant.
In the combined cycle power plants on the mainland, the steam units and gas turbines have been adapted through the installation of catalytic reduction systems and combustion optimisation systems, reducing both NOx and CO emissions.
Thanks to all these measures, Endesa's generation assets have managed to reduce SO2 levels by 88%, NOx by 46% and particulates by 88%. This reduction is in addition to the reduction already achieved with the adaptation of the Teruel, Compostilla, Puentes and Litoral thermal power plants, with desulphurisation systems in place, although these facilities are now in the process of being closed and dismantled, so the reduction in emissions will be even greater.
With all these actions, which have involved an overall investment of more than 500 million euros, Endesa is ahead of the deadline set by the European BREF emissions regulations and continues to work towards total decarbonisation with a target of zero emissions.
