Decarbonisation
We are immersed in the transition towards a zero-emission energy model with a firm and determined commitment to pursue at all times the highest possible climate ambition. We have brought forward our target for Zero Emissions to 2040, thereby achieving the transformation into a completely decarbonised company through the development of renewable energy and a focus on the electrification of energy consumption.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals
SDG 13: Climate action
SDG 7: Affordable clean energy
As a leading player in the Energy Sector, Endesa is well aware of the challenge our planet is facing to put a stop to global warming and our responsibility in tackling this task. That is why we lead the energy transition and are committed to a sustainable business model that includes the fight against climate change as a priority in long-term value creation.
We are immersed in the transition towards a zero-emissions energy model. We advocate the decarbonisation of energy generation systems and contribute to the decarbonisation of other sectors through the electrification of energy demand.
Endesa carries out promotional actions involving institutions or through industry associations, non-governmental organisations and the academic world, in order to promote our vision of the climate and policies to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. The activities in which we participate contribute both to the development of the regulatory framework and of policies necessary to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
To fulfil our commitment, we have a 2025-2027 Strategic Plan that addresses the current climate emergency and outlines a decarbonisation pathway aligned with the 1.5ºC target. This entails an investment of 9.6 billion euros, with which we support our commitment to decarbonisation through renewable generation and distribution grids (two of the mainstays of clean electrification) and the electrification of all energy use.
By updating our Strategic Plan, we confirm our commitment to fully decarbonising the company by 2040. At the end of 2024, 88% of the electricity produced in the peninsular was emissions free.
Renewable production will grow by 32% by the end of 2027, reaching 25 TWh. Up to 3GW of new capacity will be added, bringing the total installed renewable capacity to 13.1GW by 2027.
By the end of 2024, we will have reduced our Carbon Footprint by 65% compared to 2017, reaching 74% in 2030.
We have brought forward our transformation into a completely decarbonised company to 2040, with the aspiration of being 'Zero Emissions' by that year. To achieve this, we are working on the following major areas.
(1) The closure of a thermal power plant is not within the exclusive purview of Endesa and is subject to an authorisation process.
We work towards achieving this key milestone with a firm commitment to the electricity of energy consumption.
Thanks to a more efficient, resilient, and digitalised network, we will drive the decarbonisation of energy consumption in households, businesses, and public administrations.
At Endesa, we are committed to a fair transition, advocating for the inclusion of everyone in this process to achieve a sustainable future. We are aware of the importance of collaboration between governments, the private sector and the community to achieve ambitious climate goals. Since 2019, we have subscribed to the United Nations' commitment to Fair Transition under the 'Climate Action for Jobs’ initiative.
Our Futur-e initiative reflects this commitment. Through active dialogue with local communities, we draw up plans to promote economic development and job creation in areas where our plants cease operations. Furthermore, we implement a Shared Value Creation (CSV) model in our renewable projects, ensuring the integration of these facilities with their surroundings and minimising impacts. This strategy, based on participation and active listening to local actors, enabled us to win Fair Transition contests in Andorra and Pego in 2022, strengthening our commitment to sustainability and job creation.
In 2023, we started implementing the support plans for these projects, highlighting the training aimed at the local population through the Sustainable Energy Rural School. We have also started projects in the primary sector, such as Sponsor an Olive Tree, which is already creating employment in Andorra and Pego. These efforts are evidence of our determination to facilitate a fair, sustainable transition where nobody is left behind and everyone can benefit from a greener, more prosperous future.
Since 2006, Endesa has participated in the CDP Climate Change initiative, the most prestigious climate change index, which provides global information on the management of the risks and opportunities identified by the largest companies worldwide.
In the most recent edition, in 2023, we achieved the maximum score (A+), keeping us in the Leadership category for the seventh consecutive year. This excellent outcome shows our firm commitment to the fight against climate change. This recognition from CDP highlights the integration of climate change into the business strategy, transparency in communicating it, and the relationship with the value chain with respect to climate change.
We also adopt best emissions management practices and establish ambitious short- and long-term emissions reduction targets, assessing their progress and implementing effective reduction actions.
The calculation of the carbon footprint is a tool that allows the drawing up of a detailed inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a company.
We have been calculating and verifying our carbon footprint voluntarily since 2009, using a specific calculation methodology and our own computer tool, along with the implementation of a management system and the determination of a comprehensive inventory of GHG emissions and removals. This indicator enables us to design our main climate strategies and to set emissions reduction targets.
Our carbon footprint has been registered since 2013, demonstrating a path of emission reduction in accordance with the criteria established by the Spanish Office for Climate Change.
The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has once again recognised our efforts and results achieved over the years, once again awarding us the triple seal (Calculate, Reduce, Offset) from the Carbon Footprint Registry, which is granted by the Spanish Office for Climate Change to organisations committed to calculating, reducing, and offsetting their emissions. This makes us the first company in the energy sector to have renewed all three seals of the carbon footprint registry for six consecutive years.
