Who invented artificial intelligence? Origins and evolution

Artificial intelligence has come a long way since its inception in 1943, continuously transforming the way we live and work. Let’s have a look at its evolution up to ChatGPT.

Imagine a world where machines don’t just follow commands but also think, reason, and learn. It sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, right? But no—this reality has already arrived.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising how we live, work, and perceive the world. And if we think it’s just a recent innovation, we’d be mistaken.

The history of AI dates back several decades. But if you’re among those unfamiliar with this concept, let’s break it down!

What is artificial intelligence?

AI refers to a machine’s ability to mimic human cognitive functions such as learning and problem-solving.

Through complex algorithms and data models, these machines can analyse information, recognise patterns, and make decisions with precision and speed that surpass human capabilities.

Now that we understand the basics, let’s take a step further and explore how this long and exciting journey began.

The first steps of AI

Everything started in 1943 with a groundbreaking model of artificial neurons created by two visionary scientists: Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts.

Although the term ‘artificial intelligence’ had not yet been coined, their work laid the foundation for neural networks. This initiative is now essential in modern AI systems, as it even contributes to significant advancements in energy efficiency

At the time, no one could have ever imagined that they were inaugurating a new technological era.

Following these initial steps, one of the most important figures in AI’s early development was Alan Turing. This British mathematician’s work during World War II laid the groundwork for modern computing.

In 1950, Turing published a paper titled Computing Machinery and Intelligence, where he posed a game-changing question: ‘Can machines think?’ His paper not only raised this question but also introduced the famous Turing Test. This concept is a criterion for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from that of a human.

One of the most important names in the early days of AI is Alan Turing, who asked himself a question that changed everything... ‘Can machines think?’

However, the term ‘artificial intelligence’ didn’t emerge until 1956, when a pivotal summer marked the dawn of a new era.

John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon organized the Dartmouth Summer Workshop, an event that officially established AI as an academic field of study. McCarthy is considered the ‘father of AI’ for his leadership in this conference and his later work in developing programming languages.

The journey of AI: from theory to reality

The evolution of AI has been a journey filled with significant milestones:

Early AI

  • 1943: Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts introduced their revolutionary model of artificial neurons.
  • 1956: the Dartmouth Workshop marked the official beginning of AI as a formal discipline.
  • 1965: Joseph Weizenbaum developed ELIZA, one of the first natural language processing programmes simulating human conversation.
  • 1972: Alain Colmerauer and Robert Kowalski developed Prolog, a crucial programming language for AI and computational logic.
  • 1997: IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov, demonstrating that machines could surpass humans in complex tasks.

Modern AI

  • 2011: IBM’s Watson supercomputer won the TV game show Jeopardy!, outperforming the best human contestants in a quiz competition. This was also the year Apple introduced its virtual assistant, Siri.
  • 2015: Google DeepMind’s AI defeated the world champion in Go, a highly strategic board game.
  • 2022: OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, an advanced AI chatbot.
  • 2023: in response to ChatGPT-3, Google launched Google Bard in March 2023, based on its LaMDA language model family.

With each step, AI brings us closer to a future where the boundary between humans and machines becomes increasingly blurred. From the first artificial neuron models to today’s sophisticated chatbots, AI’s history is a tale of innovation, challenges, and limitless possibilities. But have we seen it all? What does AI hold for the future?

How will AI look shortly?

One of the most debated concepts is artificial superintelligence (ASI). ASI refers to intelligence that doesn’t just match but far surpasses human intelligence across multiple domains, from creativity to problem-solving and decision-making.

Imagine a digital mind without limits, capable of transforming medicine, engineering, education, and many other fields. Moreover, it provides solutions to problems that seem insurmountable today—even revolutionising waste management and recycling.

Future AI also promises to enhance our daily lives. Autonomous vehicles, smart homes, and increasingly advanced virtual assistants are just the beginning.

However, these advancements also raise challenges and ethical questions. How can we ensure ASI develops safely and benefits humanity? What regulations and legal frameworks do we need regarding AI’s impact on employment and privacy? Only the future will tell.
