Who Invented Artificial Intelligence? Origins and Evolution

Artificial intelligence has come a long way since its beginnings in 1943, evolving into the innovations we see today, and transforming the way we live and work. We'll explain how it has evolved as far as ChatGPT.

Imagine a world where machines not only carry out commands but also think, reason, and learn. It sounds like a scenario out of a science fiction movie, doesn’t it? But no, this reality is already here.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionising the way we live, work, and understand the world. And if you think this is a recent development, think again.

The history of AI began many decades ago. If you’re among the few who aren’t familiar with this concept, let’s break it down!

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence refers to a machine’s ability to imitate human cognitive functions, such as learning and problem-solving.

Through complex algorithms and data models, these machines can analyse information, recognise patterns, and make decisions with a precision and speed that surpasses the human mind.

Now that we understand the basics, let's take it a step further and explore how this long and exciting journey began.

The Early Steps of Artificial Intelligence

It all started in 1943 with a groundbreaking artificial neuron model created by two visionary scientists: Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts.

Although the term "artificial intelligence" did not yet exist, their work laid the groundwork for neural networks, essential for modern AI systems that are now capable of generating significant advances in energy efficiency.

Back then, no one could have imagined they were ushering in a new technological era.

Building on these early steps, one of the most significant names in the early days of AI is Alan Turing, a British mathematician whose work during World War II laid the foundations for modern computing.

In 1950, Turing published a paper titled "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," where he posed a question that would change everything: "Can machines think?." His paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" not only raised this question but also introduced the famous Turing Test, a criterion for determining whether a machine can demonstrate intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from that of a human.

One of the most important names in the early days of Artificial Intelligence is Alan Turing, who asked a question that would change everything... "Can machines think?"

However, the term "artificial intelligence" did not come to light until 1956, when a summer workshop marked the beginning of a new era.

John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon organised the Dartmouth Summer Workshop, an event that marked the official birth of AI as an academic field. McCarthy is considered the "father of artificial intelligence" for his leadership at this conference and his subsequent work in developing programming languages.

The Evolution of AI: From Theory to Reality

The evolution of artificial intelligence has been a journey full of significant milestones:

Early AI

  • 1943: Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts presented their revolutionary artificial neuron model.
  • 1956. The year the Dartmouth Workshop was held, considered the starting point of AI as a formal discipline.
  • 1965. Joseph Weizenbaum developed ELIZA, one of the first natural language processing programs that simulated human conversation.
  • 1972. Alain Colmerauer and Robert Kowalski developed Prolog, a crucial programming language for AI and computational logic.
  • 1997. IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov, demonstrating machines' ability to surpass humans in complex tasks.

Modern IA

  • 2011. IBM's Watson supercomputer won the television quiz show Jeopardy!, surpassing the best human contestants in a question-and-answer challenge. Additionally, Apple integrated its virtual assistant Siri.
  • 2015. Google's DeepMind programme defeated the world champion in Go, a strategy board game.
  • 2022. OpenAI unveils ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot application.
  • 2023. In response to ChatGPT-3, Google launched, in a limited release, its chatbot Google Bard, based on the LaMDA family of large language models.

With each step, artificial intelligence brings us closer to a future where the line between human and machine blurs. From the early artificial neuron models to today's sophisticated chatbots, the history of AI is a narrative of innovation, challenge, and endless possibilities. But have we seen it all? What does the future hold for AI?

What Will AI Look Like in the Not-So-Distant Future?

One of the most widely discussed concepts is Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). ASI refers to an intelligence that not only matches but vastly exceeds human intelligence in many areas, from creativity to problem-solving and decision-making.

Imagine a digital mind that knows no limits, capable of transforming medicine, engineering, education, and many other fields by providing solutions to problems that now seem insurmountable, even revolutionising recycling management.

The future of AI also promises to improve our daily lives. Self-driving cars, smart homes, and increasingly advanced virtual assistants are just the beginning.

However, these advances also raise challenges and ethical questions. How do we ensure that ASI develops in a way that is safe and beneficial for humanity? What regulations and legal frameworks are needed regarding the impact of AI on employment and privacy? We'll find out in the future.
