Nerea de la Corte: "We are continuing to make progress on decarbonisation in order to reach zero emissions by 2040"
This year, the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC) once again registered Endesa's carbon footprint, corresponding to 2020, and awarded us the triple seal. It is important to point out that we are the only energy company that obtained the triple seal for the fourth year running.
The carbon footprint is a tool that measures greenhouse gas emissions, both direct emissions generated by the activities controlled by the company, and indirect emissions over which it does not have control, but they are associated with its activity. Measuring and recording these emissions in the OECC Carbon Footprint Register has enabled us to activate the "Calculation" seal. This registry also shows a progressive decrease in our emissions, the result of the company's commitment to decarbonisation and the objective set in our Strategic Plan, together with our parent company Enel, of being a zero-emission company by 2040. The Registry itself recognises the work done with regard to reduction through the activation of the "Reduzco" seal.
Furthermore, one of our most important initiatives with regard to environmental conservation, the "Bosque Endesa" activity, has enabled us to activate the "Compenso" seal for four years, as a mechanism to compensate for part of the greenhouse gas emissions that we are unable reduce.
Endesa has always pursued excellence in environmental matters, and recognitions like this encourage us to continue and make even more progress with regard to respect for the environment. Above all, because we are now in a moment of transformation, immersed in an energy transition that has a very important environmental component.
Another crucial that will enable us to continue along the path towards decarbonisation is to promote the transformation of the current economic model from a linear to a circular model. Endesa is prepared to incorporate circular economy into the entire value chain, and that is why it has been integrated it into our culture and our activities, from the construction of new renewable plants to the relationship with our customers.
We need to accept that closing the circle is something that has to permeate the whole of society. We have to make the most of the planet's resources because they are limited. Companies like ours have a great responsibility to becoming agents for change, and energy transition presents a great opportunity. If large companies encourage and promote certain behaviours by the way they purchase and how they design new products and services, our suppliers and all our networks will begin to follow suit.
Together, we need to start promoting this circular model for it to permeates society as a whole, because the economy really needs to be circular. That is why Endesa participates in numerous forums where we share our practices and experiences with other companies, and where we generate synergies to maximise the momentum for transformation.
The administrations should establish policies that favour this new model, companies have the responsibility to set an example with regard to its implementation and promotion in our daily activities, and as citizens we have to meet the challenge of becoming more open and receptive to changing our habits, as well as accepting the new products and services that are offered to us. This planet is not something we have inherited from our ancestors, it is a loan from future generations; we have to let them enjoy it.
