- The agreement reinforces the energy company's strategy, which is the promotion of long-term bilateral contracts with large industrial customers with a view to providing them with energy at stable and competitive prices and with a clear commitment to sustainability.
- Endesa will supply 150 GWh/year for 11 years through a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), which will currently meet 55% of Saint-Gobain's energy requirements at its plants in Spain, located in Asturias, Cantabria, Community of Madrid, Guadalajara, Segovia, Tarragona and Zaragoza.
Saint-Gobain, a world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of sustainable building materials, has signed a long-term PPA (Power Purchase Agreement with Endesa.
This agreement, established for 11 years, will begin in 2024 and will meet about 55% of Saint-Gobain's electricity requirements in Spain. The electricity associated with the PPA will be 100% renewable (wind, photovoltaic and hydraulic), supporting the commitment of both companies to the environment and sustainability.
Specifically, Endesa will supply Saint-Gobain – through its retailer Endesa Energía – with 150 GWh of renewable energy per year, equivalent to supplying about 43,000 Spanish homes with renewable energy for one year. In this regard, the alliance will be applicable to the installations that Saint-Gobain has in Asturias, Cantabria, Community of Madrid, Guadalajara, Segovia, Tarragona and Zaragoza.
It will also reduce CO2 emissions by about 39,000 tons per year, equivalent to the absorption capacity of 2.6 million trees in one year.
For Endesa's General Marketing Manager, Javier Uriarte, "by signing this agreement, Saint-Gobain will be able to benefit from stable and competitive electricity prices in the long term. Endesa will also strengthen its position as an energy partner for one of our benchmark customers, while helping them to achieve their sustainability objectives."
The CEO of Saint-Gobain for Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Italy and Greece, Jean-Luc Gardaz, affirms that "this is the second PPA signed in Spain. Together, the two agreements will meet 65% of our electricity requirements. This is a major step forward in our fight against climate change and our commitment to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050."
This announcement follows Saint-Gobain's recent signing of two major renewable electricity supply agreements in Poland and North America, bringing the share of renewable electricity for the entire Group to more than 60%. This follows the recent approval by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative for the Group's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in line with the organisation's new Net-Zero Standard and the Paris Climate Agreement.
