- Tico Wind, with 180 MW of power, is located in Villar de los Navarros, Aragon, with the investment in the wind farm coming to 181 million euros.
- Endesa has organised training courses in the town of Villar de los Navarros specialising in panel assembly and solar plant maintenance and operation, as part of a plan to create shared value in the local communities in which it operates.
Endesa, through its renewable energy division, Enel Green Power Spain, has connected the 180 MW Tico Wind farm to the grid, making it the company's largest wind farm in Spain. The facility, located in the town of Villar de los Navarros, in the province of Zaragoza, with the investment in the wind farm coming to 181 million euros.
The project, on which construction began in May 2021, involved training courses in panel assembly and solar plant maintenance and operation as part of a plan to create shared value in the local communities in which the company operates. In Spain, Endesa has imparted training to more than 2,100 people in the renewable sector, helping them to access a booming labour market.
To this end, Endesa prioritises recruiting locally to construct renewable energy facilities. In particular, during the construction of TICO WIND, at its peak, 330 people were employed, including both own workers and subcontracted employees for the project. Of those involved in the construction of the facility, 30% were from Villar de los Navarros and the surrounding areas.
Rafael González, General Manager for Enel Green Power España stated that "With this project we are reaffirming our commitment to continue strengthening the renewable generation mix in Spain, which will help in compliance with its objectives with regard to green energy. We are also taking advantage of the abundance of renewable sources in Spain, while actively promoting innovation and sustainability through the adoption of international best practices during the construction phase".
The new plant will generate around 471 GWh per year, which from the perspective of sustainability has the potential to prevent the equivalent of around 192,200 tonnes of CO2 per year. Meanwhile, the plant's production has the potential to prevent the purchase of up to 88 million cubic metres of gas from foreign sources each year, replaced by renewable energy generated domestically.
Part of this energy will be for the medical company Novartis, with whom in 2020 Endesa's renewable subsidiary, Enel Green Power España, signed a pan-European Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) for 10 years for the supply of about 78.5 MW of electricity once start-up has been completed. The project will help prevent the emission of 96,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, helping to address part of Novartis' carbon footprint across its European operations.

"At Novartis, environmental sustainability is aligned with our aim of reinventing medicine to improve and extend people's lives. The launch of TICO WIND represents an important milestone in our sustainability journey to become carbon neutral across our operations by 2025 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040," remarked James Goudreau, Director of External Engagement for Environmental Sustainability at Novartis. "Energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions are at the heart of our strategy to reduce emissions and we are pleased to have partners like Enel Green Power on our side."
This wind farm was built applying the most innovative technology, such as drones for surveying, smart tracking of turbine components, advanced digital platforms and software solutions to remotely monitor and support activities.
Construction for this project was based on Enel Green Power's "Sustainable Construction Site" model, which includes a series of measures to improve safety and environmental issues, reducing emissions and water consumption and promoting energy efficiency. The most important measures included the installation of a photovoltaic solar panel kit to partly cover the energy needs of the construction site, emergency defibrillators, use of low-consumption LED lighting and systems for the collection of rainwater in storage tanks. All these items will be donated to the town of Villar de los Navarros.
Under the umbrella of the CSV, training is being promoted as an engine for local employment and measures are being taken that favour recycling, taking into account such aspects as waste recovery, circular economy and innovation measures including the use of machinery with GPS and person detection.
In the last three years, Enel Green Power España connected 19 wind farms to the grid in Aragon, located in the provinces of Teruel and Zaragoza, with a total combined capacity of 685 MW and an investment of 680 million euros.
Endesa currently manages, through EGPE, 8,390 MW of renewable capacity installed in Spain, including: 4,746 MW of hydropower; 2,546 MW of wind energy, 1,098 MW of solar energy.
