- The project launched by Endesa X in the Port of Cadiz for the construction and operation of an OPS (On‐shore Power Supply) Facility, intended to supply energy to ships at the Alfonso XIII quay, in the capital's commercial dock, involves an investment of 6.75 million euros by Endesa and 1.5 million euros by the Bay of Cadiz Port Authority (APBC) in the first phase.
- The objective of this project, in line with the APBC's sustainability strategy, is the significant reduction of pollutant emissions and the complete elimination of noise associated with the operation of conventional ship engines.
- In this first phase, it is estimated that the CO2 reduction will reach 2,520 tonnes per year.
The president of the Cadiz Bay Port Authority, Teófila Martínez, together with the president of the Spanish State Port Authority, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, unveiled today at FITUR, along with the director of Public Administrations of Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, Juan Garrigosa, the project for the decarbonisation of maritime transport in the Port of Cadiz through the OPS (Onshore Power Supply) system, designed to connect ships to the onshore power grid during their stay in the port.
The Port of Cadiz, in partnership with Endesa X, will be the first in the country to offer this service, which will be operational starting in September this year
For Teófila Martínez, the electrification project for cruise ships is a clear example of the Bahía de Cádiz Port Authority's commitment to sustainability, which she confirmed "is not an option, but an obligation. We are not free to choose to be sustainable or not. It is something we are obliged to be, and in the specific case of the Port of Cadiz, we are committed to being green," she pointed out.
In this regard, the president emphasised the need to provide leadership and play a proactive role in environmental sustainability, and recalled a number of actions within this strategy in recent years including Cabezuela's anti-pollution screens, the implementation of emission control systems, the start-up of up to three photovoltaic power plants and an eco-parking with LNG or environmental certification in progress.
This month, in addition, as the president recalled, the Port of Cadiz has supplied LNG to a cruise ship in port for the first time.
Meanwhile, Juan Garrigosa emphasised that "Endesa X will be the first company in Spain, together with the Port of Cadiz, to offer electricity supply services to cruise ships, as part of its commitment to decarbonisation. To achieve this, we are offering value propositions that support the industrial and domestic fabric and offer practical and real solutions for all sectors of society."
The project launched by Endesa X in the Port of Cadiz to build and operate an OPS (Onshore Power Supply) facility for supplying energy to ships at the Alfonso XIII quay, at the capital's commercial dock, implies an investment of 6.75 million euros by Endesa and 1.5 million euros by the APBC during this first phase.
The objective of this project, in line with the APBC's sustainability strategy, is the significant reduction of pollutant emissions and the complete elimination of noise associated with the operation of conventional ship engines.
The system proposed by Endesa X consists of connecting ships to the onshore electricity grid during their stay in port, so that the auxiliary engines they use to keep their transfer pumps, refrigeration systems, lighting, emergency equipment, etc., running, can be switched off for the entire time that the ship is docked for the loading and unloading of goods or people.
According to calculations drawn up by the Spanish State Port Authority, the reduction in emissions achieved after replacing onboard electricity generation, which is produced by burning fuel, with the ship's own connection to the grid is radical: 96% NOx, 8% SOx, 94% particulate matter and 64% CO2. In this particular project, the reduction will be even greater, as Endesa X will supply the ships with electricity certified as having renewable origin.
To this end, Endesa X will install a 16 MW modular OPS station that will transform the voltage and frequency of the grid to adapt it to the needs of the ship. The equipment will be mounted inside containers, which will allow for quicker installation and will take up less space.
In addition, the OPS station will also have a device for connecting to the ship, a mobile device with an articulated arm, similar to a crane, which will allow the cable to be connected to the ship quickly and safely.
During the first phase, the OPS system will be prepared to power a single vessel of up to 16 MVA. In the future, due to its modular nature, it will be possible to feed other ships simultaneously at the Alfonso XIII quay and at the City quay.
In the future, the electrification of the New Container Terminal and Cabezuela-Puerto Real is also proposed.
In this first phase, it is estimated that the CO2 reduction will reach 2,520 tonnes per year.
