- Endesa's Telecommunications Control Centre employs 175 people responsible for supervising telecommunications in the distribution, generation, retail and trading areas of Spain and Portugal.
- It played a key role during the pandemic, allowing the more than 9,000 employees of Endesa to work remotely.
Endesa today celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Telecommunications Control Centre, located in Seville, from which all the telecommunications operations undertaken by the company are supervised. These include, for example, the remote management and the remote operation of the electricity network. This centre also managed the telecommunications solution that made it possible to transform the way the entire Endesa staff was working in record time when the pandemic required a switch from face-to-face work to teleworking.
The event was attended by the Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Antonio Sanz; the delegate of the Regional Government of Andalusia in Seville, Ricardo Sánchez Antúnez; the Manager of the Andalusian Energy Agency, Natalia Jiménez, and the General Manager of the Digital Agency of Andalusia, Raúl Jiménez. Endesa was represented by the General Manager of Endesa in Andalusia, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla, Rafael Sánchez Durán, the Head of the Enel Group's Systems and Telecommunications Control Centres, Javier Llanes, and the Head of the control centre located in Seville, Rafael Sánchez-Palencia. The latter were responsible for explaining the work undertaken from this location for the entire company, which is a benchmark for Endesa operations in Spain and Portugal.
"We have a Telecommunications Control Centre in Seville in which 175 professionals work in shifts, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, supporting the digitalisation of our systems and services in all Endesa business areas, which will allow us to achieve our development objectives and our commitment to the energy transition. Today we are celebrating 20 years of undertaking this function from Seville, providing service to all Endesa staff and the operations with regard to the country's distribution, generation, retailing, and trading sectors, and the fact that it is based here shows that Andalusia is a benchmark with the best professionals", commented Rafael Sánchez Durán during a visit to the installations of this Telecommunications Control Centre.
The Minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification, Antonio Sanz, stressed that "without the support of telecommunications it would not be possible to achieve the digitalisation of the distribution network to which Endesa is fully committed and which is essential for the process of the electrification of the economy", whilst stressing that Endesa, a leader in the Iberian Peninsula, "plays an essential role in the daily lives of millions of people." Antonio Sanz announced the implementation of a single electronic office, in the headquarters of the Regional Government of Andalusia, where citizens will have a centralised point to access all the procedures and services available. The Minister stressed the commitment of the Andalusian Government "to simplifying, streamlining and improving public services for citizens and companies".
Endesa's Telecommunications Control Centre provides operational support for telecommunications services throughout the Iberian Peninsula and for all the company's business lines (distribution, renewable generation and thermal generation, retailing and trading); it is also the telecommunications support for generation plants in Portugal and Endesa's call centres.
A total of 175 people, who manage an average of 20,000 calls per month, work in these installations, enabling the company's employees to do their work without issues and enabling the digitalisation of Endesa's processes and activity. Without the support of telecommunications, it would not be possible to achieve the digitalisation of the distribution network for which Endesa is fully committed and which is essential for the process of electrification of the economy, which requires the development of the electricity grid increasing its capacity, resilience and efficiency.
For distribution operations, they specifically ensure the connection between the electricity sub-stations and the transformer stations with the high and medium voltage control centres respectively, enabling the remote control of these essential infrastructures for the operation of the networks, which in turn enables operations such as the remote recovery of supply in the event of incidents for example.
For the power generation business, they manage communications between renewable and conventional assets (wind, hydraulic, photovoltaic and thermal plants) and generation control centres, allowing them to know at all times how much energy they are producing and also enabling their remote operation.
This enclave is also responsible for communication between the telemetry and remote management systems, enabling the flow of data. This Control Centre also manages the communications of the hubs with the charging stations for electric vehicles, as well as being responsible for enabling all Endesa workers to use corporate applications. Its role during the pandemic in 2020, was essential as it enabled Endesa employees to work remotely from their homes from one day to the next.
With all these capabilities, the Telecommunications Control Centre manages more than 375,000 services that are essential for Endesa's operation every year. After two decades of activity, it continues to innovate. This year it is planning to incorporate Artificial Intelligence solutions into the centre's activity in order to optimise production processes. It is also promoting the management of Internet of Things services to increase knowledge about their performance and to make it easier to use technologies that reduce the carbon footprint.
