- Endesa, responsible for managing more than one hundred wind farms in Spain, repaired, restored and reused up to 3,200 different kinds of devices during 2020 and has added a further 2,500 components already in 2021.
Endesa, as part of its commitment to the application of the circular economy in relation to renewable generation, has been applying the philosophy of repairing, restoring and reusing components that break down on the wind turbines installed at its wind farms for a decade now, with a view to reducing costs and the consumption of materials.
"Endesa applies innovability: innovation and sustainability to be leaders of change, and it does so by offering wind turbine components a second life", asserts Juan Tesón, Director of Wind Operations and Maintenance at Endesa, who explained that "thanks to the repair and reuse of components, we reduce costs, the consumption of raw materials and we are more sustainable".
Repairs are carried out by specialist companies, generating an important activity, estimated at about 80 direct jobs.
Specifically, in 2020, nearly 3,200 pieces of equipment of different sizes have been reused or repaired, taken from large components like gearboxes, generators or transformers, to small components such as rotary reducers, slings or vanes. So far this year, this figure stands at more than 2,500 components.
Endesa continues to dedicate efforts to the circular economy, offering components a second life while generating economic activities in the areas where the companies that carry out the repairs are located: Galicia, Aragon, Castile and León, Madrid and the Canary Islands.
Endesa's renewable subsidiary, Enel Green Power Spain, boasts 110 wind power facilities spread across 9 autonomous communities with a production of 2.7 gigawatts.
