- Including those released today, this makes two releases of a total of 32 chicks of this species of Spanish lineage reintroduced in the United Kingdom and recovered again in Spain within the framework of the LIFE EUROKITE project.
- Endesa is participating in this project in its role as a company committed to preserving biodiversity in the areas in which it operates. This action is in addition to other measures taken to adapt its electrical networks for the protection of avifauna.
Today saw the second release of the last specimens of red kite within the AMUS LIFE EUROKITE project in which Endesa is collaborating within its commitment to the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of species at risk of extinction.
LIFE EUROKITE is a project aimed at strengthening the breeding populations of as number of species in southwestern Spain. In 2022, 30 individuals were released and this year another 32 red kites originating from the United Kingdom were released. They were released in two sessions that took a week apart from the acclimatisation installations in the municipality of Valencia del Mombuey in Badajoz. Today saw the release of the second group consisting of 16 red kites.
A total of 100 specimens of this bird will be released over a three-year period (2022-2024). The objective of this action is to strengthen the threatened red kite populations of southwestern Spain (Extremadura and Andalusia) and very probably also of southern Portugal, all of which have been in continuous decline over the last 30 years. The red kite is listed as a threatened species in Spain, and because of the significant decline in its populations (mainly those furthest south) has been classified as an Endangered Species.
Endesa is one of the companies participating in this project as part of its commitment to preserving the rich biodiversity present in this community. The company has been adopting bird protection measures in its electricity networks for more than a decade now.
In its solar plants it also applies environmental measures including the installation of nest boxes for kestrels and owls to ensure more of these species return, the construction of shelters for herpetofauna, the placing of nest boxes for solitary arthropods to favour flowering and temporary waterlogging for soil restoration.
