Seven record shops to celebrate Record Store Day
Since 2008, one Saturday in April has been designated to support and celebrate independent record stores. Those strongholds and trustworthy venues where the physical format is most highly valued and therefore the music itself. They are the heart of the music industry and there is one common feature that fortunately never fails: Record shops are only as valuable as the people behind them, committed to their way of seeing the world in a business in constant transformation. We would like to recommend some of our favourite record shops, here we go!
Marilians Records (Madrid)
Our first stop is in Madrid and it is not too far from the centre, because at a point between Plaza España and Malasaña is an unbeatable location Marilians Records (Calle Noviciado, 9). The ideal place for Spanish indie, full of Spanish and international novelties and with the best atmosphere. It is also often used by record companies for presentations so we recommend you keep up on their social networks so as not to miss the opportunity to meet your favourite artists. Iván Ferreiro, Ginebras, Menta and Nena Daconte have recently been seen there. There is nothing.
Delia Records (Madrid)
Now we move on to Atocha where we will find another benchmark in Madrid, Delia Records. "Support your local scene" is their motto and the driving force behind everything that happens in the shop. It used to be in larger premises in the same street, where there used to be countless live presentations and fairs not only related to music but with a broader artistic vision, all part of an invaluable cultural fabric. One of those small miracles that would be unthinkable without the initiative and personal drive of a group of people crazy about music. Delia Records is now at number 25 Calle Delicias and specialises in genres like rock, punk and garage, alternating between new goods and second hand, merchandising and books, and also taking the offer outside its own premises as a concert promoter and record label.
Discos Marcapasos / Discos Bora Bora (Granada)
Let's take a walk in Granada. After tasting some local pastries in the Plaza de la Trinidad to get us ready for the day, we will walk as far as the Calle Duquesa no. 6 where we find Discos Marcapasos. It should be your lucky day, especially if you like funk, soul or jazz. Although you can find everything here in one of Granada's cultural oases, a very elegant place by the way, including for example an interesting selection of books about music. Not far away, just past the Botanical Garden, you will find Discos Bora Bora. Undoubtedly another of the obligatory stops for music lovers, with a wide variety of new goods and a captivating second-hand collection. It is worth exploring all the nooks and crannies of a shop that is almost a museum, with part of the history of rock in Granada decorating the walls. If your luck holds you maybe also enjoy a showcase because it is almost a tradition that bands that are going to play live in the city that night visit Bora Bora beforehand.
Lizard Discos (León)
León is another of those delightful, monumental cities where, as if that were not enough, music has also always been a part of its landscape. Place of pilgrimage mod every December with the celebration of the Purple Weekend and home of Los Flechazos, and that's just for starters. A musical refuge has recently opened, it is called Discos Lizard (Calle Serranos, 24), run by the musician and promoter Juancho López, a true classic of the scene. Once again, it is not only a record shop but also the base from which to operate as a concert promoter, mediating so that many of the most interesting international tours come to play in the city. The shop focusses on vinyl, with space also for second-hand goods. A great place to come and browse.
Ultra-Local (Barcelona)
In Barcelona so is so much culture on offer, and it could not be otherwise. This is also the case when it comes to record shops. However, we would like to give special mention one of those shops that really has a different feeling. Ultra-Local (Calle Juan Francisco, 17) is located in small premises in the neighbourhood of Poble Nou, and as its name suggests specialises in local music. There you will find material from all the Catalan labels and numerous self-published bands. Although according to Los Ganglios, there they once found something else. It also serves as an ideal venue for acoustics and presentations of albums by emerging bands, one of those places that, as we have said in other cases, is not satisfied with just selling records, but is concerned with creating networks and serving as an amplifier for what is happening locally and deserves to be heard.
Discos Cucos (Santander)
If enjoying a walk through the centre of Santander already makes it your lucky day, imagine if you also come across a venue ideal for music lovers, called Discos Cucos (Calle Sta. Lucía, 41), job done! Cantabria, the home of Los Deltonos, of extraordinary emerging groups such as Repion, Ángel Stanich and Malamute, also has its musical oasis and it is called Discos Cucos. So much material and great variety displayed with care that will delight fans of music and films. Here you can also enjoy showcases and presentations.
The list could well continue, and there are many places where you can spend the afternoon rummaging through vinyl or finding the T-shirt of your latest favourite group, whilst enjoying the hospitality and tips from true experts in the field. Do not hesitate to go to your main store this Saturday, 22 April and help support your local scene.
