130 years since the birth of light in 'El Electrón', La Palma
Endesa's Director of Communications in the Canary Islands, Delia Jiménez, explains that "Endesa has been working on this initiative for months, aware that the Canary Islands are small in size but big in terms of talented people in different areas, as well as companies and institutions that strive to apply sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices in their day-to-day work". Precisely, sustainability and biodiversity are values that are part of Endesa's current philosophy and that mark the company's path towards decarbonisation in the Canary Islands, which will be a full reality by 2040.
In this sense, Delia Jiménez also highlights that 2023 has been chosen as the year to start with the Endecan awards, "because it coincides with a very important anniversary for the Canary Islands". On 31 December it will be 130 years since the arrival of electricity on the islands, a milestone that took place at the 'El Electrón' hydroelectric power station on La Palma. Santa Cruz became the sixth city in the world to harness electricity. Endesa recently ceded this infrastructure to the city council of Santa Cruz de La Palma "with the aim of making such a significant facility once again part of the heritage of the people of La Palma", says Delia Jiménez.
