The engineers of the Higher Technical School of Engineering at the University of Seville (ETSI in Spanish), Juan Francisco Moscoso and Miguel Castro, have been presented with the Endesa Chair award, which annually recognises the research undertaken by undergraduate and master's degree students.
Endesa's General Manager for Andalusia, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla, Rafael Sánchez Durán, and the coordinator for the Endesa Study Programme, Alicia Sánchez, presented the awards at the XIX edition of the Endesa Study Programme Awards at the School of Engineering, with a prize of €1,000 being awarded in each category with a view to supporting the engineers of the future. The event was also attended by Andrés Sáez Pérez, Manager of the School of Engineering of the University of Seville, and Antonio Gómez Expósito, Manager of the Study Programme on behalf of the University.
"At Endesa, we are committed to supporting the next generations of engineers, and our awards, which we have been awarding for nineteen years, are a clear reflection of this. We have received projects of exceptional academic quality, which reflects the enormous potential of the new generations in the field of engineering," said Rafael Sánchez Durán during the awards ceremony.
The jury of experts selected 12 finalists from the more than 40 projects presented, (8 Graduate projects and 4 Master's Degree projects). The criteria taken into account when selecting the winners were mainly the originality of the proposals, their vision for the future and the development of their proposals, as well as innovation and the application of new technologies to the electricity network infrastructure.
The engineer from Ecuador and Master's Degree student in Electricity Systems, Juan Francisco Moscoso, was the winner in the Master's Degree category for his work on "Conservation Voltage Reduction: Review of the state of the art". This project has been recognized for its meticulous review of the current state of the CVR (Conservation Voltage Reduction) system, which aims to save energy through voltage reduction. In addition, it highlights the in-depth analysis of the effects and applications of this technique in both conventional and modern electrical systems.
Miguel Castro, born in Seville and with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Technology Engineering specialising in Electricity, was the winner with his Graduate Project on "Methodology for the modelling of three-phase transformers and systematic testing of energisation intensities". This work focuses on the complexity of connecting generators to the power grid. A process that involves multiple pieces of equipment, including the connecting transformer, and requires special care due to the different conditions that can occur depending on the characteristics of the equipment and the time of disconnection. The award-winning project proposes a methodology to model these transformers and comprehensively study all possible connection scenarios, which offers two key advantages: It makes it possible to study systems already built to avoid failed reconnections and also helps in the design of new generating facilities by analysing the behaviour of the system before assembly, which improves the design and selection of equipment.
The creation of the annual Endesa Chair Award dates back to 2004 and resulted from a series of agreements reached between the Company and the University of Seville to grant the award, establish a framework for scientific-technical collaboration and acknowledge young talent.
