- The Women's National squad has been presented at Endesa's headquarters in Madrid alongside the Minister for Culture and Sports, its sponsors and the media. Their primary objective: the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 in Valencia. And the word on everyone's lips is excitement.
The Spanish Women's Basketball squad is on its way to Valencia following its official unveiling at Endesa's headquarters in Madrid. The event was attended by the players called up for the preparatory tour for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 and the coaching team headed by Lucas Mondelo.
Hosted by Tresco and Atiga, presenters of the Time Out programme, the unveiling was also attended by the 17 players called up by Lucas Mondelo: Laia Flores, Raquel Carrera, Maite Cazorla, Paula Ginzo, Nogaye Lo, Laura Quevedo, María Conde, Tamara Abalde, Queralt Casas, Leticia Romero, Astou Ndour (que se incorporará más adelante), Leo Rodríguez, Cristina Ouviña, Laura Gil, Alba Torrens, Silvia Domínguez and Laia Palau.
The captain stated that "by winning two consecutive golds we have made history. We're playing at home, we're really excited and we'll fight to achieve our full potential. The results will take care of themselves." Alba Torrens added: “It is a special year because I am returning to the team. Excitement is the word and it's a real source of motivation for us all. We're going to pull out all the stops and that means we're sure to be competitive."
The head coach Lucas Mondelo said "it's tough making the selection but that's good for Spanish women's basketball. Here we are seeing the present but the future is incredibly bright too." Of the double challenge of the EuroBasket and the Olympic Games he stated that "at the physical level I'm sure everything will go well and we need to work on our mindset. We can become legends and that will really spur us on."
The event also provided an opportunity to promote the Basket Girlz programme, an Endesa initiative to establish why girls give up playing basketball prematurely. Following this farewell event in Madrid, the national team faces the exciting challenge of further extending a decade of success which has seen it achieve four consecutive European medals.
