An immersive experience of light, sound and video mapping will allow you to enjoy Burgos Cathedral as never before seen thanks to innovative and artistic interior lighting in the chapels and liturgical spaces. Endesa and its Foundation have developed this multimedia project, "Stella", which explains the Cathedral's historical, social and religious journey. The initiative is part of the events organised by the Cathedral 8th-Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021 to commemorate its 800th anniversary.
"Stella" is a powerful immersive visual narrative based on light and sound with striking optical illusions, special effects and the latest technologies in video mapping. Complemented with an emotional original soundtrack. Specifically composed for the occasion, it follows the pace of the story, and stresses the most outstanding and spiritual moments.
A rigorous and exhaustive process of theological and historical documentation-gathering has resulted in the recovery from the Cathedral's archives of an unedited song from the 15th century that can be heard, for the first time, during this tour.
This is night-time experience offering a different way of getting to know Burgos Cathedral, to understand its meaning as a space and to listen to its message and feel its spirit. During approximately 60 minutes, immersive and multimedia scenes show the chapel of the Presentation, the chapel of Santa Ana, the Golden Staircase, the Constable chapel, the main altarpiece and the central nave, with the dome as the central axis and final point on the route.
During the opening ceremony yesterday, the archbishop and chair of the Cathedral 8th-Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021, Mario Iceta, emphasised the "excellent work of light and sound" that allows you to get to know Burgos Cathedral "from a novel and profound point of view. The title 'Stella' refers to the Virgin Mary, who is a morning star. She not only reflects the light of the sun, Jesus Christ, but also shines with her perpetual virginity and motherhood".
"It is an honour for the Endesa Foundation to participate in this historic and unique moment, and to be able to celebrate together the 800th anniversary of this exceptional monument," said Endesa chairman Juan Sánchez-Calero. By developing this cultural proposal, we help to bring the history of Burgos Cathedral to its visitors and contribute to its national and international promotion and projection, in addition to capturing and multiplying its magnificence. And we do it in a responsible way, using the most advanced and innovative technology, which will lead to energy savings, turning it into a novel and sustainable experience. 'Stella' will be the light of Burgos and the rest of the world". In fact, this is a carbon-neutral visit.
Endesa has developed the Stella project by harnessing the Endesa Foundation's experience of more than 20 years and its management of more than 700 artistic illuminations of monuments throughout Spain. In addition, it relied on work by two of the company's main lines of business: Endesa Energía, for electricity supply and Endesa X, a subsidiary specialised in urban and artistic lighting, in charge of the project's technical execution.
José Bogas, CEO of Endesa, stressed that the company joins this celebration "doing what we do best, bringing our energy, bringing light so that we all continue to enjoy this magnificent temple. Supporting and promoting culture in many of its variants is one of our hallmarks and that is why we attend this inauguration with enthusiasm, humility and excitement, knowing that light is one of the best intangible goods from which a society can benefit".
During the opening ceremony, in which a commemorative plaque was unveiled in the chapel of the Presentation, the vice president of the Cathedral 8th-Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021, Antonio Miguel Méndez Pozo, stated that this initiative is "a beautiful finishing touch for 2021. I am convinced that it will also be a starting point to bring focused attention to the Cathedral, Burgos and the province".
Open days from 27 December
With a view to allowing the people of Burgos to enjoy this experience and this unprecedented view of the Cathedral, the Cathedral 8th-Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021 and the metropolitan chapter will organise open days, on the 28th and 29th of December and on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th of January and then from the 10th to the 13th of January. Free tickets can be collected at the Pilgrim Reception Centre from 24 December.

On 20th July 2021, we celebrate the 800th anniversary of the laying of the first stone in Burgos Cathedral, the reason for creating the Cathedral 8th-Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021, with Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain as honorary chairs. Sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Culture and declared an event of Exceptional Public Interest, this project has been designed with the vocation of uniting the city of Burgos around the celebration of this anniversary, through cultural and social projects over the coming years. Together with the Cathedral, the Foundation focuses its attention on a series of vitally important cultural projects for Burgos and its province: born from the idea of Burgos as a land of origins, the projects include the sites of Atapuerca, the Camino de Santiago and the Geopark Las Loras, recognised by UNESCO; and the Spanish language, the Camino del Cid, the Consulate of the Sea and the eighth centenary of the death of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
