- Endesa X has been awarded the tender made by this institution based in Burgos.
- The approximately 2,300 photovoltaic modules that will be installed on the roofs of a number of buildings at the University will enable the generation of a total power of 1.27 MWp.
- The solar energy produced by the solar panels will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 551.8 tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of planting 3,305 trees.
Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, will be responsible for building and commissioning 10 photovoltaic solar plants in 8 buildings at the University of Burgos following the award of the public tender. With this initiative, the institution will make a start in solar self-consumption and will strengthen its sustainability policy as a result of being able to produce up to 28% of the energy required to undertake their activities from their own rooftops.
In this regard, this commitment to solar energy is part of the strategy of the University of Burgos to transform a large part of its infrastructures into low-emission buildings. The main line of this research focusses on the study of the possibilities of cost-effectively transforming the current model for energy use in the existing buildings in cities with the aim of finding low-emission and low-energy consumption solutions. It is essential to transform existing urban districts into areas with low-emission, energy-efficient buildings because many buildings continue to rely too heavily on the use of fossil fuels for heating installations.
The installation of solar panels to be undertaken by Endesa X will consist of 2,298 photovoltaic modules distributed on the roofs of 8 buildings, generating a total power of 1.27 MWp. This will enable the University of Burgos to continue making progress in the reduction of its carbon footprint, for which it has already been included in the Registry of the Spanish Office for Climate Change, without external dependencies, initiating the move towards self-consumption. The environmental benefits that these installations will generate annually will prevent the emission of 551.8 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year, equivalent to the absorption capacity of 3,305 trees/year, which will contribute to confirming the position of the University of Burgos as a university clearly committed to sustainability in Spain.
The solar panels will be installed in a number of the University's different buildings. Firstly, in the faculties of Sciences, Education, Health Sciences, Humanities and Communication, Economics and Business Sciences and in the University Library. And then in the Higher Polytechnic School, solar panels will be installed on the buildings of La Milanera and Río Vena.
No initial investment
The planned investment is about €1 million, but because of a novel formula adopted by Endesa X, the University of Burgos will not need to make any initial investment because Endesa X will assume the cost of installing the self-consumption photovoltaic plant and this will enable the university to allocate its resources to other initiatives.
In this type of contract, a fixed price associated with the energy produced by the self-consumption installations is established and Endesa X will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and exploitation of the installed infrastructure during the 10 years of the contract. This type of agreement will enable this Institution in Burgos to increase its level of certainty with regard to part of its energy costs for the duration of the contract. After ten years, the University will then fully manage its photovoltaic installation.
