- The Torrepalma plant, which came into operation at the end of 2021, will be able to produce enough energy for the annual energy consumption of a neighbourhood equivalent to Alcosa or Los Remedios.
- More than 250 people helped to build the plant, 90% of whom were from the province of Seville.
The mayor of Seville, Antonio Muñoz, visited today the Torrepalma solar plant, commissioned by Endesa in Seville. The mayor toured the premises with the General Manager of Endesa in Andalusia, Extremadura, Ceuta and Melilla, Rafael Sánchez, and was told that the material used during the construction will be donated to the city of Seville. This is Endesa's third renewable power plant in the province.
"Endesa is firmly committed to the decarbonisation of the energy mix by 2040; for this reason, we are making an effort to develop new renewable capacity in Andalusia, a land rich in sun", said Rafael Sánchez, who highlighted "the importance of carrying out this type of work while considering the local communities at all times. It is not only a matter of building new renewable capacity, but of doing it so that it belongs to everyone; that is why the sheep of local shepherds graze and naturally clear the land and why we are going to donate part of the material used in the construction so that it has a second life".
"We are living a climate emergency and we face the challenge of moving towards decarbonisation and the reduction of emissions by complying with the Paris goals," said Antonio Muñoz, stressing that "Seville is one of the cities that has pledged to become climate neutral before 2030. That is one of our greatest challenges at the moment. To achieve our targets, public-private partnerships are essential, as present in projects such as this new Endesa solar plant and the proposed circular economy model for its construction, with the reuse of materials in the orchards of Guadaíra. We will continue to work together on new initiatives that allow us to leverage the possibilities offered by renewable energies."
Through Endesa's renewable subsidiary, Enel Green Power España, a donation will be made to the Guadaíra park association, in the south polygon of Seville, of part of the material used during the construction, a project completed as per the model of sustainable construction sites. Endesa will donate a kit of self-consumption panels to install in the association's urban gardens, a 10,000-litre water tank and a HeartSINE SAM 350 P defibrillator model.
The Torrepalma solar plant has an installed capacity of 22 MW, thus avoiding the emission of about 35,000 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere. More than 250 people have worked, 90% of whom were from the province of Seville, to build the plant in a record time of just five months. Endesa's new 15-million-euro infrastructure will produce 42.4 GWh per year, the equivalent to the annual energy use of a neighbourhood such as Alcosa or Los Remedios.
In December in Andalusia, Endesa, through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power España, launched the San Antonio solar plant, the company's first plant in the province of Huelva, and is finalising the details for the commissioning of the Sol de Casaquemada plant located in Sanlúcar la Mayor, in the province of Seville.
In addition to the aforementioned Torrepalma and Sol de Casaquemada plants, Endesa has two other renewable plants in the province of Seville, Las Corchas and Los Naranjos in Carmona, where pioneering projects such as agrivoltaic or solar apiary have been carried out, a leading example for the rest of Spain.
Endesa currently manages, through EGPE, 8,389 MW of renewable capacity installed in Spain, including: 4,672 MW of conventional hydraulic power; 2,546 MW of wind power, 1,097 MW of solar power, and 75 MW of mini-hydraulic power.
