- Endesa, through its renewable energy division Enel Green Power España, and the medical company Novartis have signed a pan-European Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) for 10 years for the supply of some 78 MW of renewable electricity as of January 2022.
- Endesa will become Novartis' "green supplier", and will support the medical company in its journey towards environmental sustainability with the zero-emissions energy generated at the Tico wind farm, with an installed capacity of 179.9 MW, and which will be located in the municipalities of Villar de los Navarros and Azuara, in Zaragoza.
Endesa, through its renewable energy division Enel Green Power España, and the medical company Novartis have signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for 100% renewable energy over 10 years to supply 78 MW of renewable electricity. This pan-European VPPA will start in January 2022 and will help Novartis achieve its goal of 100 percent renewable energy and carbon neutrality across its operations in Europe by 2025.
The energy supplied due to this agreement will be generated at the 179.9 MW TICO Wind Farm, promoted and built by Endesa, located in the municipalities of Villar de los Navarros and Azuara, in the province of Zaragoza, which will be operational by early 2022. Thanks to this contract, the renewable energy supplied to Novartis will prevent the annual emission of around 96,400 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
"Novartis is a leading company in environmental and sustainability matters, and at Endesa we are very proud to be a strategic partner and the green supplier to accompany the company in this great objective: to achieve carbon neutrality in all operations and in the supply chain", said Javier Vaquerizo, Head of the Global Commercial Office of Enel Green Power. "With this agreement, Novartis highlights the possibilities that pan-European VPPAs offer to companies committed to fighting climate change on the continent."
"At Novartis, environmental sustainability is aligned with our purpose of reimagining medicine to improve and extend people's lives," according to Montse Montaner, Novartis Director of Sustainability. "Energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions are the foundation of our strategy to reduce emissions. We are proud that Enel Green Power and other like-minded partners are joining us on our journey towards environmental sustainability."
This agreement is part of Novartis' commitment to environmental sustainability by turning the company’s focus towards energy and climate resilience. The company aims to promote sustainability in the area of its operations, as well as those of its suppliers, and has set ambitious goals to minimise its impact on the climate, waste and water. Novartis is committed to using resources efficiently and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which affect the climate.
In the case of Endesa, other types of operations associated with the company's renewable parks have already been carried out, such as the PP agreement, reached a year ago, for the Primoral wind power plant, located in Villamayor de Gállego, also in Zaragosa, which has an installed capacity of 34.65 MW, and which has already come into operation with the production of 107.6 GWh per year.
Endesa is the leading electricity company in Spain and the second in Portugal. It is also the second largest gas operator in the Spanish market. It is an integrated business operation that encompasses everything from generation to marketing, and through Endesa X it provides added value services aimed at decarbonising the energy used in homes, companies, industries and government agencies. Endesa is firmly committed to the United Nations SDGs and as a result decisively promotes the development of renewable energies through Enel Green Power Spain, the electrification of the economy and Corporate Social Responsibility. We also work in the latter area through the Endesa Foundation. We have around 10,000 employees. Endesa is part of Enel, the largest electricity group in Europe.
