- The renewable electricity supply will be produced through a hybrid combination of renewable sources (wind and solar) at three power plants located in Spain.
- Endesa, through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power Spain, has signed a Pan-European Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) for the supply of 270 GWh/year of renewable energy, which will begin in January 2023.
- This VPPA, along with other agreements previously signed by the healthcare multinational, will bring Johnson & Johnson to an equivalent consumption of 100% renewable electricity in Europe in 2023.
Endesa, through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power Spain, has signed a 10-year Pan-European Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with the healthcare multinational Johnson & Johnson. The VPPA, which will begin in January 2023, foresees the supply of 270 GWh/year of renewable energy produced from a total generation capacity of 104 MW, and from three facilities located in Spain, one in Extremadura and the other two in Castile-La Mancha.
This VPPA, along with other agreements previously signed by the healthcare multinational, will bring Johnson & Johnson to the equivalent of 100% renewable electricity consumption in Europe by 2023. This is a big step towards its climate target of 100% renewable electricity globally by 2025.
"We are very proud to have achieved this type of innovative agreement that allows us to combine two renewable technologies, wind and solar, and to be in charge of accompanying a company such as Johnson & Johnson on its way to carbon neutrality in all its operations," said Rafael González, Endesa's general manager - Generation. "With this agreement, we demonstrate that pan-European VPPAs are an essential tool in the fight against climate change on the continent and Endesa will continue to work in this line."
The energy supply foreseen in this VPPA will be generated at three renewable plants currently under development, creating a hybrid energy mix that will combine solar and wind sources. 85% of the energy will come from the Campillo II and III wind farms, which are part of a cluster located in the Spanish province of Cuenca, which will begin construction in the last quarter of 2021. While the remaining 15% will be provided by the 47 MW Veracruz photovoltaic plant, located in Badajoz. Through the agreement, the renewable energy provided to Johnson & Johnson will avoid the annual emission of around 130,720 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Johnson & Johnson is committed to using resources efficiently and to reducing greenhouse gas emissions that affect the climate. As a leader in the healthcare industry, the multinational company knows that human health is inextricably linked to the health of the planet: healthy people need a healthy planet.
The VPPA signed by Enel Green Power Spain and Johnson & Johnson is a financial agreement that does not require a physical delivery of energy. It provides the buyer with a financial price hedge and the corresponding Guarantees of Origin linked to the energy production of renewable plants. VPPAs allow all types of businesses to leverage renewable energy on a commercial scale while benefiting from the flexibility of a customised solution.
