As of today, the metropolitan area of Paris has its first public compressed natural gas (CNG) station for refuelling vehicles quickly. Located in the Autonomous Port of Paris, in Bonneuil-sur-Marne, this is the first large pubic gas station in France, covering an area of 4,000 m2 and with two pumps, which could be increased to four in order to simultaneously refuel four trucks.
The inauguration was attended by the president of the Ile-de-France Region and the president of STIF (the transport syndicate of the Paris region), Valérie Pécresse; the general marketing manager at Endesa, Javier Uriarte; the president of SIGEIF (the association of town councils for the management of gas and electricity of Ile-de-France), Jean-Jacques Guillet; and the general manager of GRDF (the largest French gas distribution company), Edouard Sauvage.
This project forms part of Endesa’s strategy of investing in gas as an alternative fuel for heavy vehicles, with the aim of reducing pollution levels in urban areas. Natural gas for vehicles (NGV) is a fuel that reduces particulate emissions by 95%, SOx emissions by 100% and NOx emissions by 65% versus petrol. BioNGV – methane from renewable sources – enables CO2 emissions to also be slashed by 90%.
The metropolitan area of Paris, where the gas station is located, which will be open 24/7, 365 days per year and will provide compressed natural gas (CNG) for fast refuelling, is the most populated area of France, with 11 million inhabitants. According to data obtained from the World Health Organisation (WHO), 92% of the global population live in areas in which poor air quality levels exceed the limits established by this organisation.
An agreement signed today will see Endesa continuing to work towards providing specific solutions to tackle pollution, with an ambitious gas station roll-out plan in France. In 2017, the company plans to open three public gas stations for heavy vehicles in Vannes, in the Brittany region, Saint-Etienne in the region of Auvernia-Ródano-Alps and in Vitrolles in the Provence-Alps-Côte d'Azur region.
Apart from the environmental benefits, NGV enables savings on fuel and maintenance costs. With an autonomy that can exceed 500 km in heavy vehicles, NGV is the alternative to diesel for transporting goods by road.
Endesa began selling gas in Europe in 2000 and it currently has an important presence in France, offering energy solutions to professionals and large consumers, with a long-term implementation strategy. Projects are carried out from Endesa’s branch in France for the supply of natural gas to the industrial, agricultural, distribution and services industries throughout the country.
