General Manager of Endesa Andalusia and Extremadura Francisco Arteaga and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Junta de Andalucía Carmen Crespo, signed a collaboration agreement at Endesa's stand in the Green Zone at COP25 today to sponsor bird protection measures in Andalusia. Under the four-year agreement, both organisations will join forces to carry out projects to adapt power lines so that they do not injure protected species of birds.
Under the initiative, the Junta and Endesa, which are already working together to protect birds, will step up coordination between the two entities, creating a regional Joint Commission to monitor the actions undertaken. Endesa has undertaken to carry out and keep an up-to-date inventory of the lines whose supports and spans are equipped with elements to protect birdlife, reviewing one third of the lines on a yearly basis.
The agreement also includes carrying out scientific studies and technical research projects to develop measures to improve the systems used to protect birds in Andalusia, as well as information days for staff and collaborating companies.
Endesa invested over €400,000 in Andalusia last year on bird protection measures, which included cable insulation, upgrading power line supports and installing anti-collision devices.
The company has renewed and adapted 24,000 electrical supports throughout Andalusia in order to protect birds, particularly raptors in danger of extinction, focusing particularly on areas such as La Janda, Sierra Morena, and Doñana. During the present year Endesa has continued to take action to protect birds, investing more than €20 million to date installing bird protection measures in Andalusia.
Endesa, aware of the importance of protecting these species to ensure the conservation of biodiversity, has taken an active role in devising and implementing measures to protect birds in Andalusia. The Company collaborates with the Environment and Water Agency of the Junta de Andalucía and with the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, holding four technical workshops in Malaga, Tarifa, Morocco and Tunisia for more than 100 participants.
