Endesa has launched a new electric vehicle car sharing service at six of the its main offices, to enable all employees to carry out their work-related functions in urban areas in a sustainable and pollution-free manner.
The temporary use of vehicles or vehicle lending, also known as car sharing, is a system for using or renting vehicles for short periods of time.
The electric vehicle car sharing service initially provides 18 BMW i3 vehicles, which have an approximate range of 13 km, and the aim is to include another 10 units from now to the end of the year. Endesa employees can use an online tool to reserve vehicles for hours or even full days.
The cars will be located at six of the company’s main offices: Ribera del Loira (Madrid); Borbolla (Seville); Vilanova (Barcelona); San Juan (Palma de Mallorca); Woermann (Las Palmas); and Mayorazgo (Tenerife). The service will also soon be available in Zaragoza. The company is installing conventional charging points at all sites to enable cars to be charged overnight ready for the next day. Furthermore, the Madrid and Barcelona offices have fast charging points that enable batteries to be charged to 80% capacity in approximately 20 minutes.
If they have not already tried them, employees will be able to learn about this technology by taking out one of the shared electric cars, thereby raising awareness.
Car sharing
Car sharing programmes began in Switzerland in 1987. Since then a number of other countries in Europe and North America have introduced this new mobility concept, which now has over 900,000 users worldwide. Today, it is estimated that car sharing is available in over 600 cities in 18 countries across four continents, with a fleet of over 30,000 vehicles. Car sharing is attractive to customers who only use vehicles occasionally, as well as others who would like to use a different vehicle to the one they use on a daily basis. The electric vehicle is the most recent addition to car sharing, since it is a technology that responds perfectly to users’ needs and concerns.
Safe, sustainable and electrified mobility
Safe, sustainable and electrified mobility is a key part of combatting climate change. Endesa has firmly committed to it through its 2014-2016 Safe and Sustainable Mobility Plan. 80% of this plan had been completed by the end of 2015, including 21 measures aimed at its employees, fleets, suppliers and customers, slashing the need to travel (teleworking), encouraging the use of alternative modes of transport to the private vehicle (car sharing, travel cards), and if private vehicles are absolutely necessary, boosting uptake of electric vehicles among employees, fleets, suppliers and customers and rolling out measures to promote efficient and safe driving.
