- Barcelona, Cologne and Stockholm are the three cities chosen in which to implement the initiatives.
- The company will be focusing its activities on electric mobility and energy efficiency.
- In Barcelona, Endesa will be installing five FASTO rapid chargers and three V2G or bidirectional charging points.
- The project consortium has 38 European partners and a total budget of €43.3 million.
Endesa and its partners have launched the Growsmarter project, one of the initiatives chosen by the European Commission to seek innovative solutions relating to sustainability in the smart cities of the future.
The project is part of Horizon 2020 (H2020), the research and innovation programme launched in the European Union over the period 2014-2020. With a budget of €80 billion, it is financing initiatives and projects which offer clear added value in research, technological development, demonstration and innovation.
GrowSmarter aims over the next five years to develop demonstrators of innovative solutions relating to sustainability within smart cities. The project has a total budget of €43.3 million and, during its execution, is expected to create up to 1,500 new jobs in Europe.
Barcelona, Cologne and Stockholm are the three cities which have been chosen for the project. They will be acting as ‘lighthouse cities’, implementing 12 solutions for smart cities developed by the participants: advanced information and communication technologies, better connected urban mobility and energy efficiency solutions. All these initiatives are to be carried out in different areas within the cities, including downtown, suburban and industrial areas, ensuring a representative sample to be applied to European cities.
In particular in Barcelona, an urban plan will be developed based on efficient city blocks, with residential customers, small businesses and hotels/industries. Activities will be carried out on this city block, mainly relating to:
- Sustainable mobility: the plan is to deploy a fleet of 20 electric taxis. Endesa, in particular, will manufacture and install 5 FASTO quick chargers, which allow the charging of all types of electric vehicles. Furthermore, it will manufacture and install 3 V2G or bidirectional chargers, in order to demonstrate the storage in an electric vehicle using real customers. The points will be located in a public parking area or shopping centre in the neighbourhood of Glories.
- Centralised control of the city block: this will involve working on the integration of the information generated (electricity, transportation, etc.) in a single platform called “City-OS”. Each consortium partner has a specific role to play and Endesa will be focusing on demonstrating energy efficiency as an aggregator of energy consumption by municipal facilities and improving the resilience and management of the city by providing information on electrical distribution systems.
The project consortium in which Endesa is taking part also involves 38 other partners including Philips, IBM, Schneider and IREC.
