  • Project CIRVE (www.cirveproject.com) plans to locate 25 new rapid recharge points in Spain and adapt another 15 existing points.

The CIRVE project takes a step forward today in the development of electric mobility in our country. The members of the consortium have signed an agreement in Madrid to allow the interoperability of the 40 fast charging points belonging to this initiative. As result, these 40 points will be operative along corridors that will connect Spain with the rest of European countries from 2019.

The project CIRVE (Iberian UE Corridors for EV Fast Charging Infrastructure) was launched last year by EDP, Endesa, GIC, Iberdrola and Ibil as charging managers together with Spanish Electric Vehicle Cluster (AEDIVE), Renault Group and the Center for Excellence and Innovation of Portugal (CEIIA). In addition, this initiative has the support of the Spanish Ministries of Promotion and of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. The plan is co-funded through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2015 call.

Due to this interoperability agreement and thanks to CIRVE efforts, most important barriers to Electric Mobility introduction will be broken:

The deployment of the recharging infrastructure on roads and service stations will allow electric vehicles’ users to travel longer. This is one of the keys to massive introduction of EVs in our country.

Secondly, interoperability will facilitate to any user to recharge and pay at any public recharge point easily and simply, regardless of who is operating it.

According CIRVE sources “interoperability is one of our focus. The aim is to have all the developed infrastructure ready to be used through an only identification avoiding the need of carrying several cards or identification applications. Interoperability is key for VE development and the challenge is even greater if the final goal is to get the interoperability cross borders”.

The interoperability agreement signed today between five charge managers, partners of CIRVE project (EDP, Endesa, GIC, IberdrolaIbil) and Hubject platform will allow all 40 quick charging points of this project to be interoperated.

The CIRVE project will be developed until the end of 2020 and its 40 recharging points will be part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), a Programme established by the European Commission to support the construction and upgrade of transport infrastructure across the European Union.

The specific locations where fast charging points are to be installed have been selected according to the requirements of this TEN-T program.

Background information for editors

The mission of CIRVE Project is allowing the connection of the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe travelling by electric vehicle. Its Spanish acronym stands for “Iberian Corridors with fast Recharging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles”. Thus, the project plans to locate 25 new rapid recharge points in Spain and adapt another existing 15 points already in operation in certain strategic locations along the Iberian corridors. The initiative entails an investment of 3.5 million euros and an execution period over 4 years.

The project is jointly managed by IBIL (project leader), EDP, ENDESA, GIC and IBERDROLA, together with the AEDIVE Association and two additional international partners: RENAULT and the Centre for Excellence and Innovation of Portugal, CEIIA. In addition, it has the support of the Spanish Ministries of Promotion and of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. The plan is co-funded through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2015 call. www.cirveproject.

The TEN-T Network

The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) is an EU programme that supports the construction and upgrade of transport infrastructure to ease the communications between people and transport across the European Union. Through this policy, Europe finances strategic projects for the future of the mobility in the old continent. Among them, the quick charge infrastructure for electric cars on corridors plays a relevant role.

These corridors, like the Iberian ones, have the objective of implementing an infrastructure of speed charge for electric cars along the main European roads, that allow to travel in electric vehicle inside the countries of the European Union and between them.
