- The company is renewing its presence after the review from the second half of 2018
- The group’s subsidiaries, Endesa, Enel Américas and Enel Chile, also confirm their presence in the latest edition of the index
Enel S.p.A. ("Enel") has once again been confirmed in the FTSE4Good Index Series, which classifies the world’s most important companies by evaluation of their environmental, social and governance practices (ESG), after review of the index in the second semester of 2018. The subsidiaries of Enel, Endesa, Enel Américas and Enel Chile, have also been reconfirmed in the latest ranking.
Developed by FTSE Russell, a global leader supplier in benchmark analysis and management of data with capabilities, the FTSE4Good index evaluates corporate performances based on their undertaking to integrate sustainable ESG practices into their corporate management. Enel especially scored highest on criteria regarding waste management, preservation of biodiversity, health and safety, work regulations, risk management, corporate governance and anti-corruption. The FTSE Russell method is based exclusively on publicly available data, which requires significant transparency by companies, whereby Enel’s confirmation in the index highlights the Group's significant undertaking in the promotion of accountability and transparency.
Apart from this ranking, the Enel Group appears on other leading sustainability indices such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Euronext Vigeo-Eiris Indices, STOXX Global ESG Leaders indices, Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, OEKOM "Prime" rating, the indices ECPI, Thomson Reuters/S-Network ESG Best Practices Indices, Thomson Reuters Diversity & Inclusion Index, Integrated Governance Index and the Top 200 ranking by Equileap on gender equality.
Enel’s sustainability leadership attracts increasing interest from ESG investors, whose stake in the company is constantly growing; it represents over 8.6% of the Group’s shareholder capital at 31 December 2017, with an increase of 46% compared to 2014.
This increase reflects the growing importance the financial market places on non-financial aspects in the creation of long-term, sustainable value. Enel has taken up a leadership position with a strategy based on taking advantage of business opportunities associated with urbanisation trends, electrification of demand and the resulting in-depth decarbonisation, to use opportunities arising from the global energy transition currently taking place and playing an active role in such a great global challenge.
Enel’s integral sustainability strategy, demonstrated by its inclusion in this ranking, is outlined in its document titled Ciudades del mañana. Ciudades circulares (Tomorrow’s cities. Circular cities)", published in November 2018. The document sets out Enel’s position on the fundamental role cities will play in promoting sustainable development and the innovative solutions currently offered by the company.
