Endesa opens its first natural gas vehicle plant in Madrid

• This new public service station located in the town of Valdemoro will supply compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
• The fleet of AISA buses serving the towns of Pinto, Valdemoro and Ciempozuelos will be the main beneficiary of this gas station.

The Minister for Transport, Housing and Infrastructure in the Community of Madrid, Pedro Rollán Ojeda and Javier Uriarte, Endesa’s General Manager of Marketing, today inaugurated the company’s first public service station tol supply natural gas vehicles in Madrid, specifically in the town of Valdemoro.

Endesa’s “gas station” is public and will supply both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). With this station in Valdemoro, Endesa will have five stations working over the next few months as part of the company’s natural gas vehicle development plan implemented in Spain and France. 

Endesa opened its first natural gas vehicle refuelling station in Palma de Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, followed  in 2015, by its first gas station in France, in the city of Lyon, and now this station in Valdemoro hasjoined the list. New gas stations in Zaragoza and  Cadiz are also to be opened in the first six months of this year, as part of the company’s roll out plans.

Endesa’s commitment to natural gas vehicles is based on the major economic and environmental benefits of this fuel compared with traditional fuels. The use of natural gas vehicles reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 70% and sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by practically 100%. Furthermore, it reduces 95% of particle emissions and the engines, which produce only half as much noise and vibrations, emit 20% less CO2 into the atmosphere.

The new supply point inaugurated today is located in the town of Valdemoro, which is easily accessed from exit 29 on the A-4 and is used by over 40,000 vehicles a day. The new station will initially supply this fuel to a fleet of buses, belonging to the company AISA, which serve the towns of Pinto, Valdemoro and Ciempozuelos.

AISA currently has 200 vehicles, 10% of which will be natural gas vehicles before the end of the year, which will not only improve service competitiveness and comfort for passengers, but also prevent the emission of over 40 tonnes of NOx and 32 tonnes of SO2. 

Natural gas is used in over 14 million vehicles worldwide, 1.3 million of which are currently located in Europe. In Spain the NGV market is mainly urban bus fleets, municipal service fleets and long-distance road transport vehicles. Natural gas vehicles represent savings of almost 50% over petrol vehicles and 35% over diesel vehicles, with very similar maintenance costs, the same supply waiting times and an autonomy of around 300-400 km or even more in the case of liquefied natural gas.
