Why supermarkets invest in LED lights

Proper and efficient lighting is key for many businesses, and a supermarket is a good example, where lighting is used both to make products look more appealing and to properly preserve them. Here is why LED lights are the best choice.

The dimensions and needs of a supermarket require a large amount of artificial light. Taking this into account, its managers will need the best quality/price ratio in lighting systems, and also to achieve greater energy efficiency and savings in electricity consumption.

As we have already seen, LED lights stand out from other bulbs in every way. They use up to 80% less electricity than normal incandescent bulbs, and do not emit heat, UVA or infra-red rays. This favours optimal preservation of all the products found in a supermarket, especially in the fruit, vegetables and fresh meat or fish section.

LED lights are also perfect for illuminating exteriors, parking lots, lifts for large sales areas, or for use on illuminated signs.

Clear and bright lighting gives the supermarket a fresh, well-kept and appealing atmosphere for shopping, while at the same allowing customers to clearly see all the details of an item: price, label, ingredients, nutritional values, colours and appearance, etc. This is something that consumers much appreciate.

In addition, the wide range of colours and shapes of LED lights contributes to the decorative aesthetic, which is also important in a supermarket.

How long do LED lights last and how do they work?

LED lights are more efficient at converting energy into light. Their operation is based on the diode: a two-pronged electronic component that allows energy to flow through it in one direction. When electrons pass through this type of semiconductor, they turn into light.

As for the duration, while a normal light bulb has a useful life of approximately 5,000 hours, the useful life of an LED is greater than 100,000 hours of light. For all these reasons, LED technology is already well established in homes and businesses of all kinds. But now let's see the advantages of installing it in a supermarket.

Advantages of LED lights in a supermarket

We have already seen one of the most important benefits: they consume less electricity than traditional light bulbs and energy-saving light bulbs.

This is a technology that does not degrade from continually being turned on and off, which this does not affect its performance, and the bulbs have greater durability. This translates into significant savings in the short and long terms, both in maintenance and spare parts for the lights themselves, and in the annual electricity bill.

A good lighting project is vital to get the most out of the products and make sure this is reflected in sales. It’s important to avoid having too much light and choosing the wrong source. It is a well-known fact that an important part of the success of a supermarket is its image, and LED lights contribute to this in a very positive way.

Did you know that when buying fresh products, colour is one of the most persuasive factors? A good colour provides a suggestive image, which invites direct consumption. And then straight to the shopping cart!

Add to this the fact that LED lights provide quality artificial light. They do not get hot and therefore do not emit heat: almost all the energy goes into generating light. For this reason, their installation in refrigerators helps avoid food deterioration, favouring preservation. At the same time, the fact that the lights do not emit heat translates into savings on air conditioning.

"This is a technology that does not suffer from continually being turned on and off, which does not affect its performance, and the bulbs have greater durability."

LED lights do not contain highly polluting elements that are difficult to remove, such as mercury or tungsten. And because they last up to eight times longer than traditional lights, less waste is generated for the planet.

As if all this were not enough, they create a light that is less attractive to insects as it is not ultraviolet or infra-red, which are more attractive to annoying mosquitoes. The presence of insects in a supermarket is unthinkable, as they give a very unhygienic image.

LED light types according to product

There are different models of LED lights depending on the size, colours or intensity of the light. LED strips and ceiling lamps are perfect for large department stores because they are capable of lighting almost any area, such as furniture or shelves.

"There are different models of LED lights depending on the size, colours or intensity of the light."

A supermarket has several points of light: including the entrance and exit to the car park, general lighting through the aisles, or the more centralised lighting on each of the shelves or islands. There are also recommendations for each section.

Fruits and vegetables will need a more focused and warmer light, bringing natural colour out, while in the bakes and pastry section, a white, clear light will be best. There are also specific recommendations for each type of meat or fish. For red meat it is best to choose a warm colour, and if it is white meat it should always be displayed under a cold white light.

Fish, which is found on counters with large amounts of ice, is best lit by a cool white light, as its reflection off of crushed ice makes the fish look fresher, juicier and more appetising.

The latest: the future of lighting

This is one more step in the digitisation of information and consists of LED labels with sensors that save on raw materials and time for workers, who will no longer have to change the labels manually or print them. These lamps with motion sensors allow light to be adapted to needs in real time. Another step that major brands are taking is the step towards smart lighting.

The latest generation of LED lamps are equipped with motion sensors and can take advantage of natural ambient light to achieve more efficient consumption, while always guaranteeing perfect lighting. These smart lights use 'internet of things' technologies to communicate with each other like a neural network, operating wirelessly.

Will this be applicable soon in the opening of new supermarkets? What is clear is that there is no more profitable option than LED lights, and that it is a more than justified investment that is also beneficial for the environment.
