- A preview of the Jardín de las Delicias festival took the city centre by surprise today with a mini-concert by Hey Kid and Paula Mattheus, two of the artists on the bill for the event, which will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Cantarranas venue at the Complutense University of Madrid.
- The live performance, held as part of European Mobility Week, served to present the special service that, for the fourth consecutive year, will provide Jardín de las Delicias attendees with a free electric bus, thanks to an agreement between Endesa and the Municipal Transport Company (EMT).
- In addition to the artists, the event was attended by Borja Carabante, Delegate of the Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility Area of Madrid City Council; Alfonso Sánchez, Managing Director of EMT; Ignacio Asensi, Head of Sponsorships at Endesa; and Gonzalo Marrón, representative of the Jardín de las Delicias festival.
Endesa, the Municipal Transport Company (EMT), and the Jardín de las Delicias festival filled the centre of Madrid with music with a surprise mini-concert by two of the hottest young artists on the national pop scene, Hey Kid and Paula Mattheus. Together, they performed six songs live at the junction of Gran Vía and Calle Montera, a preview of the 29 concerts that will take place at the Cantarranas venue at the Complutense University of Madrid this Friday and Saturday.
At 11:30 a.m., singer-songwriter Hey Kid, strumming the chords of 'Los Lugares Donde Irás,' stepped off one of the free electric buses that will run between Moncloa and the festival this weekend. Moments later, Paula Mattheus joined in, performing 'La Salvaje' to create a unique and special experience that combined music, emotion, surprise, and sustainable electric mobility, to the delight of dozens of passers-by and onlookers who enjoyed 30 minutes of unexpected musical performance.
For Hey Kid, this was his first-ever street performance: 'I didn't expect Gran Vía to get so crowded. I was a bit nervous at first, but it was worth it. I thank Endesa and El Jardín de las Delicias for giving me the opportunity to experience things like this.' Meanwhile, Paula Mattheus explained that 'this was just a small taste of what we will experience this weekend. I'm sure both Hey Kid and I will put on some amazing shows.'
With this surprise event, Endesa and EMT have presented, within the framework of European Mobility Week, the agreement that will facilitate mobility for attendees with a special free electric service, with constant round trips between the Moncloa interchange and the festival grounds. The special service will run from 2:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and from 12:44 a.m. to 3:44 a.m. from the Moncloa stop.
From Cantarranas, for the return journey, buses are scheduled from 2:10 p.m. to 9:16 p.m. and from 12:30 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. The frequency of these shuttle buses is approximately 10-12 minutes.
Ignacio Asensi highlighted that 'this agreement with EMT is a success that began at the same time as our sponsorship of El Jardín in 2022. Endesa's commitment to music involves supporting festivals with initiatives like these, which show that sustainability not only cares for the planet and reduces emissions but is also useful, in this case, for the thousands of festival-goers. It's our way of reaching all of society and the younger public, creating moments like this surprise concert that open the festival up to the city.'
For Borja Carabante, Delegate of the Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility Area of Madrid City Council, 'this initiative highlights the festival and also the best way to get there, which is on a free electric EMT bus funded by Endesa. With this sustainable mobility action, everyone, particularly the younger audience, can arrive in the best conditions of comfort, quality, and safety. We thank Endesa for its ongoing collaboration with Madrid City Council.'
Gonzalo Marrón, representative of Jardín de las Delicias, thanked 'Endesa and EMT for helping to make this dream a reality. We started six years ago as a small event, and now to be on Gran Vía is something incredible. Hand in hand with Endesa, we want to continue working, continue growing, and create a spectacular festival that combines the best of the Spanish-language music scene with sustainability.'
Commitment to sustainability
The sixth edition of the Jardín de las Delicias festival is sold out, meaning attendance will exceed 50,000. Of these, if last year's figures are repeated, at least 5,000 will use the special bus service. However, this is not the only sustainability measure that will be implemented at the festival. Thanks to the energy company, there will be 50 free parking spaces for the first 50 electric cars that arrive at the Ciudad Universitaria car park. It is estimated that 80 per cent of a festival's emissions are caused by travel.
Another key measure in reducing emissions will be the supply of 100% renewable electricity for the festival's assembly and disassembly tasks, provided via batteries. In the realm of the circular economy, one hundred per cent of the materials for the festival's two stages are recycled or reused from the 2024 edition. In addition, the reuse of cups will be promoted, offering a free drink for every 20 cups returned to the Sustainable Bar.
A spectacular lineup of music in Spanish.
The Jardín de las Delicias festival has established itself as one of the best events on the Spanish-language music scene. This year, the Endesa stage will feature, in addition to the aforementioned Hey Kid and Paula Mattheus, artists such as Melendi, Dani Fernández, Mikel Izal, Álvaro de Luna, Pignoise, Siloé, Nena Daconte, Íñigo Quintero, Hermanos Martínez, Depol, and Tu Otra Bonita.
It will also feature a performance by La Última Copa, winners from a total of 441 artistic proposals in the first edition of the Endesa Play emerging talent contest. The Madrid duo triumphed last June and won a spot on the Jardín de las Delicias lineup as their prize. Their concert will be the first on Saturday on the forest stage.
Endesa also sponsors other festivals, such as Icónica Santalucía Sevilla Fest, Cruïlla Barcelona and Espacio Zity Zaragoza, and Dansaneu in Lleida. Once all these events have taken place, they will have attracted a combined total of over half a million attendees. In the words of Ignacio Asensi, 'our commitment to music is a testament to our dedication to being close to society and connecting with a young audience, promoting measures that make festivals even better places to feel moved and happy with the people around us.'
