The energy we generate when walking is enough to charge a mobile phone?

Charge your mobile

We know that when we walk we perform movements that “burn” energy. Energy, as we saw in How electricity is generated, is generated by movement.

So if electricity is movement, can we use any kind of movement to generate electricity? Is it possible to charge your mobile by walking?

Movement and energy

Yes, but with lots of caveats. Not all movement is capable of being converted into electricity, we need technology to make this change possible. In addition, the amount of electricity also depends a lot on the power of the movement and it is very difficult for a small or short movement to generate enough energy.

For example, electricity can be generated by pedalling a bike, but the amount of electricity we generate is very small and in practical terms will be enough to turn on a light for a short period of time (unless we pedal for many hours and accumulate all that energy).

Charging system in your shoes

In the case of generating electricity while walking, a device developed by engineers at the University of Wisconsin has succeeded in transforming the movement we make when we walk into 20 watts (10 watts per foot). This mechanical energy, which is produced both by movement and by impact with the ground, would be enough to charge a mobile phone, for example.

In fact, there are already prototypes of shoes with a charging system fed by the movement of the feet, to which a device can be connected: a phone or an iPod, for example. A very useful device, for example, for mountaineers or runners, who no longer have to worry about their GPS device running out of battery or being without music from their iPod in the middle of their journey.
