A total of 112 students from 21 vocational training institutes offering Dual Vocational Training specialized in the operation and maintenance of medium and low voltage networks have successfully completed their 2nd year and received the official completion certificate. Of the total, 70% have received job offers from the contracting companies of Endesa where they have been carrying out their training internships.
The students began their training in September 2022, and after two years, they have completed the Intermediate Cycle of Electrical and Automatic Installations or the Higher Cycle of Electrotechnical and Automated Systems in the 6 Autonomous Communities where Endesa operates the distribution networks: Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Catalonia, and Extremadura. The course has proven to be a great springboard for entering the job market, as 75% of students accepted job offers and were hired by Endesa’s partner companies as soon as they finished their training. The remaining 25% decided to continue their studies or switch sectors.
These dual training cycles bring classrooms closer to businesses by combining theoretical training with practical experience, opening the way for students to develop a professional career in the electricity distribution sector. The internships provided them the opportunity to experience firsthand the daily fieldwork carried out by e-distribución, Endesa’s distribution subsidiary, to ensure the electrical supply and modernize and adapt the networks to the challenges of the energy transition, and have opened doors for them to find their first job.
Miguel Domínguez Morón, one of the students who successfully completed this Dual Vocational Training and accepted the offer made to him, comments on this program: “I would recommend it to other young people because I think it’s key that they teach you the theory in class, which at first you think is easy and you understand; but then, when you go to the internship, you have it in front of you and see how it’s done, it’s a whole new world. It’s really appreciated that you start entering the labor market before finishing the Vocational Training to get into a work environment, and if you’re lucky, stay in the company that taught you.”
“With this dual training model, we all win: the students, who get their first contact with real fieldwork and the possibility of finishing the course with a job offer in hand, and the companies themselves, who gain access to new professionals and can contribute to their training, tailored to their needs,” says Josep María Sayols, Head of Purchases in Endesa's Networks Division.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, collaboration will continue with the 21 institutes that have developed the program over the past two years, and five more will be added, bringing the total to 26.
A Sector with a Future
The distribution networks have become the backbone of the energy transition process. They are what will allow for an increasing integration of renewable generation into the electrical system, the massive deployment of electric mobility, self-consumption, or the widespread use of heat pumps as a heating method. In this new scenario of a radical shift in the role of electricity distribution, professionals will be increasingly needed to maintain, modernize, and expand these networks by applying the latest technologies.
That’s why Endesa will allocate the next three years €2.8 billion to distribution networks to increase supply quality, flexibility, and resilience of the electrical infrastructure, and that’s why they, together with their contracting companies, have invested in this collaboration in Dual Vocational Training, focusing on enhancing the training of students, especially in all matters related to safety.
In total, the students have more than 1,000 hours of fieldwork practice that allow them to familiarize themselves with the infrastructure and the work behind ensuring electricity reaches homes and businesses.
The Higher Cycle in Electrotechnical and Automated Systems and Intermediate Cycle in Electrical and Automatic Installations include a specific safety module promoted by e-distribución in collaboration with the Education Ministries of the six Autonomous Communities, which completes the necessary knowledge to operate the electrical networks, including new training regarding low voltage work, work at heights, and work in underground installations. The students accompany the teams, face real-life situations from the fieldwork, and operate professional equipment in what becomes their first contact with the labor market.
e-distribución also offers free training to the teachers from the participating centers (64 in 2022, with another 22 teachers added in 2023 and 26 in September 2024).
