Sustainable mobility in companies: Benefits and examples
The commitment of companies to reducing their environmental footprint is growing every day. This trend will only increase in the coming years, and unlike what some people may think, it is not a difficulty but a real business opportunity.
What is electric mobility in companies?
It refers to an internal plan that includes all vehicles that are part of a company's transport fleet, powered by one or more electric engines, and that also use electricity from rechargeable batteries.
These sustainable mobility plans are increasingly common in the business environment motivated by society itself, which has begun to be more aware of the need to adopt stricter environmental policies, and an important part of these measures directly affects industrial activity.
Electric mobility is an essential driving force behind these commitments But this is not something that has to be done as an obligation, we are talking about new technologies that can generate immediate benefits for companies that are bold enough to transform their vehicle fleets.
These benefits will make those who are bold more competitive, through direct savings and the possibility of improving services in areas where those who are more conservative are unable to go.
In other words: The challenge is rewarded with a prize for those who are brave. Complying with regulations and increasing profits at the same time. And what is more, there is a third benefit on the horizon: Investment in electric mobility generates a significant improvement in brand reputation. This can be seen (and measured) both internally (perceived feeling among staff) and externally (public image).
“Switching to electric mobility is a 3-in-1 for companies: Keeping ahead of regulations, increasing profits and improving brand reputation.”
The importance of Sustainable Mobility in delivery companies
The main European cities are closing their historic town centres to a large number of combustion-engine vehicles. This route, which has been undertaken in both Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, will soon be followed by many other cities in all countries. This is why it is important for sustainable electric mobility to be within everyone's reach.
At first glance it would appear to be an obstacle, and in fact many companies are being seriously affected by these restrictions. The hours when products can be delivered and distributed are very restricted. This causes a certain collapse, a great loss of time, delays and added costs. In many cases it also leads to severe deterioration in customer service.
But think only about the obstacles? There are so many benefits to electric mobility. It is not a pothole but a ramp which builds momentum. The urban environment is the place where the electric vehicle performs perfectly. Many of the companies providing home delivery services have not been slow to change their fleets to an electric solution. Electric motorcycles were those that were introduced most quickly. Those who are afraid and delay in making the change may be making a bad mistake.
A small scooter maintains the great flexibility of a petrol motor scooter, with a very similar performance with regard to speed and power, but it is much less noisy, cleaner and its consumption is much lower than that of a combustion-engine motorcycle. And what is essential: It can move freely throughout the city.
In the cities, there are many companies that would disappear without home delivery or distribution. Service is an essential component of their product. Take food delivery chains, for example. And it would be unfeasible for an express courier company to have limited delivery in areas where they cannot circulate. For them, even the use of electric bicycles by their delivery drivers is a more than effective option.
In the same way, electric mobility for delivery cars and vans is essential for medium and small logistics and distribution companies. They enable them to have a greater charging capacity and autonomy, so they can establish longer routes for the same vehicle and optimise the charging and recharging of electric vehicles.
They also benefit from not being subject to restricted access hours, a reduction in costs (fuel + maintenance) and the effect on their reputation by demonstrating their social commitment.
“Every company that depends on motorised distribution faces a fundamental challenge: to be electric or not, that is the question.”
Benefits of sustainable electric mobility in companies
It would be naïve to think that this revolution affects only companies that have delivery and distribution fleets. The electrification of vehicles and business transport is critical to sustainability. Companies that maintain significant investment in commercial human resources are similarly affected. If sales teams cannot easily visit customers and make the required product demonstrations, results will decrease significantly.
Again, an apparent obstacle. And again an opportunity. With the addition of fleets of electric light vehicles, this problem is not only solved, but also increases the team's capacity. This is because the closure to other types of vehicles in certain areas has had two very clear effects:
- Traffic flows more smoothly as a result of a decrease in the number of vehicles driving along the streets.
- It is easier to park in areas with restricted access. This means that sales staff can park very close to the customers' location.
All of this translates into more effective work time and performance. So sustainable mobility enables the optimisation of a resource as important as the human resource, bringing its effective performance closer to 100%.
But, it also generates double savings:
- Savings in fuel and maintenance.
- Savings in parking costs.
E-sharing, which consists of the incorporation of electric vehicle fleets to be shared by their workers, is the formula that is most frequently being adopted in companies to progressively experiment with this switch and enjoy the results in efficiency and savings.
It consists of acquiring fleets of vehicles, generally by leasing, and making them available in an orderly manner to their workers without the direct assignment of vehicles, but with all vehicles being shared. The aim is for there always to be a vehicle available for the worker who needs it. There are also other added benefits, such as taxes and subsidies for this type of vehicle.

Examples of sustainable mobility in companies
Fleets of 100% electric cars
They are also known as BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). Its engine is electric and transforms the energy that has been stored in its batteries into kinetic energy and then uses it to drive the wheels of the car. These vehicles enable you to make considerable savings on maintenance. They make use of the energy generated by braking and uneven road surfaces to produce electricity and store it in their batteries.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles
Their use is becoming more and more common both by companies and individuals. They have two engines, an electric engine powered by batteries and the other by petrol or diesel. Their versatility enables you to manage their energy very well. The electric mode is ideal for urban driving, and the combustion engine for long-range travel. Companies often combine their fleets with hybrid vehicles to adapt their electric mobility projects to each environment in which they operate: City, countryside, mountains, long, medium or short journeys.
It is not only about cars
The type or format of electric or hybrid vehicles in each company's fleet will depend on its business activity and routes. For some, vans and light vehicles will be their main means of transport, but others will prefer motorcycles, scooters or electric bicycles, together with other more functional alternatives in cities which have schedule and emission regulations, as well as in small towns with streets where space is limited.
