Endesa has already installed 7 million smart meters, which represents 60% of its 11.6 million existing devices. The company will complete almost all its installation plan by 2017, one year ahead of the 31 December 2018, which is the date set by the Spanish legislator for the replacement of all meters. The implementation of the smart management system is one of the Endesa’s key projects and will involve a total investment of 600 million euros for the 2015-2017 period.
Endesa is the leading company in Spain in terms of meter replacements and it has decided to speed-up the introduction of smart meters, which, among other features, enable the hourly reading of customers' consumption data. Endesa's updated Strategic Plan for the 2016-2019 period, estimates that at the close of 2016, 80% of smart meters will have been installed, 70% more than the figure established by legislation.
Endesa’s meter replacement plan in the areas in which it operates as a distribution company, (Catalonia, Aragon, Andalusia, Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands) requires the installation of all meters belonging to customers with contracted powers of up to 15 KW and the installation of 140,000 data concentrators, which enable the system to communicate with the associated meters.
More than a thousand engineers from 70 companies are working on replacing devices in those areas where Endesa operates in Andalucía, Extremadura, Catalonia, Aragón, and the Balearic and Canary Islands.
Endesa's smart meters have been developed by the company in Spain using the same technology already used by Enel in Italy for 40 million customers and which enables operations related to supply to be carried out, such as changing supplier, changing contract, remotely adding new customers or removing them, and in less than 24 hours in most cases.
Smart meters open the door to the development of new services and features in terms of smart networks, the integration of distributed generation or e-vehicles. Furthermore, hourly readings mean that estimated bills are now a thing of the past and they provide customers with new tools to improve their energy efficiency and detailed information about their consumption.
Endesa is already managing hourly consumption information for over 6.4 million customers, which involves processing over 153 million hourly records.
Endesa has also launched a new area on its website www.endesadistribucion.es that provides further information concerning the company’s power distribution network for all users and it also enables customers with smart meters and a contracted power of up to 15 kW to see their "hourly load curve".
Customers can use this area to graphically view their consumption during a specific period, measured hourly and they can also download the information to a file.
