Combating climate change
We contribute to combating climate change
Combating global warming is included in our business strategy as a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development. These are some of the most notable figures in this area:

Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the planet. At Endesa, we are very aware of the urgency of tackling this challenge decisively and studying the risks and opportunities that come with it. For this reason, combating global warming is an integral part of our business strategy and one of the pillars for maintaining a sustainable business model.
Total decarbonisation of the generation mix by 2050
We have drawn up a roadmap for achieving the total decarbonisation of our power generation mix by 2050. It sets intermediate CO₂ emissions reduction targets of 66% by 2023 and 80% by 2030, compared to 2017. This roadmap is based on a clear commitment to renewable energies in order to achieve 75% CO2 emission-free production by 2023.
In our 2021-2023 Strategic Plan, we have reinforced this commitment to decarbonisation with increased investment in renewable energy, digitalisation of the power grid, and electrification of residential demand and that of sectors such as industry and transport.
Our commitment is to reduce specific CO₂ emissions by 80% by 2030 compared to 2017, which keeps us aligned with a scenario of a maximum increase in global average temperature of 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial period. To do this, we plan to increase the renewable generation fleet from the current 7.8 GW to 18 GW in 2030, with an associated investment of around €10 billion, which will allow us to reach the target of 80% CO₂ emission-free generation by 2030.
We participate in CDP Climate Change
We have been collaborating since 2006 with the CDP Climate Change initiative, the most prestigious climate change index, which offers comprehensive information on the management of the risks and opportunities identified by major companies worldwide.
In the latest edition, we obtained a “Leadership” rating of “A”. This excellent result reflects our strong commitment to combating climate change. This recognition by the CDP acknowledges the integration of climate change into our business strategy, our transparency in communicating it, and our relationship with the value chain in the area of climate change.
In addition, we have adopted the best practices for managing emissions and set ambitious short- and long-term emissions reduction targets, evaluating their progress and implementing effective reduction actions.
Carbon Footprint
Carbon footprint calculations are an instrument that allows a detailed inventory to be made of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a company.
At Endesa, we have calculated and verified our carbon footprint voluntarily since 2009. This indicator allows us to design our main climate strategies and set emission reduction targets.
In 2020, we verified our Carbon Footprint for 2019 and registered it with the Spanish Office for Climate Change, which has recognised our efforts to reduce it.
