Save electricity in summer (without suffering from the heat)
Good air conditioning and a cheap electricity tariff certainly help to save. However, today we would like to go further and give you some simple tips so that both your bills and you stay comfortably cool in the hottest months.
We wait all year for summer and when it comes we die of the heat. Temperatures rise every day and we start getting sleepless nights, continuous showers and with the windows wide open looking for some fresh air.
There is a simple solution: Install air conditioning.
And so that you can enjoy it without the expense skyrocketing uncontrollably, here are some tips that will help you enjoy a comfortable temperature at home (without suffocating your bill).
Let's get started.
But there's so much more... You can also save depending on your habits and actions. Let's see how:
"Did you know that air conditioning badly used can account for up to a third of household expense? "
Use good air-conditioning
If you haven't put the appliances in yet or are thinking about renewing your air-conditioning, ask a qualified professional to help you choose the most suitable air conditioning system for your home.
When you choose you should not only take into account which way it faces, the materials and the design, but also the number of people living there, what they do and even how old they are.
As a general rule you should follow the advice of the Ministry of Industry and set the thermostat at 26º.
This is called the consensus dry temperature; enough to be comfortable in light clothing and without risk of suffocation.
Below this temperature consumption skyrockets and you could get a real shock with the next bill.
"26º is the ideal temperature to feel comfortable indoors in summer."
Check the insulation in the house
You would think insulation would be an issue in the winter, but good insulation is also a factor when it gets really hot. Because where the heat escapes when it is cold is exactly where it gets in during the summer.
Everything you invest in improving the thermal insulation in your home will help you save 24/7 and 365 days a year.
"You can save up to 60% in energy by installing awnings over the windows that face the sun and by properly insulating roofs and walls."
Close the windows during the day
A classic saying in Spanish during the summer: a sun that punishes, empty streets and windows shut tight.
Direct sunlight into the house gives so much life, but also makes it really hot, especially for south-facing windows.
So as not to waste energy in air-conditioning, close all outside doors and windows, close the curtains and lower the awnings when the air conditioning is working.
You can also save by choosing which rooms you want to keep cool and closing the others. That way you will not waste energy cooling areas that do not need to be kept cool.
And when it gets cool outside... open everything up and let the air in!
Programme the thermostat and forget all about it
Lowering the temperature when you get home to make it cool down faster is not a good idea.
Why?
The contrast between the outside heat and the jet of cold air may affect your health, and the fact is you will not get more comfortable in less time.
Just an expense that really is not worth it.
According to the IDAE (Spanish Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving) each degree you lower the thermostat means an 8% increase in the bill.
Make it all easier because the summer is long. Set the thermostat at around 26º and let the air conditioner do its job.
Your home is not the office
Does wearing a jacket indoors and taking it off when you go out ring a bell?
Even if you are telecommuting you do not need to have the house as cool as an office building. Below 26º you are not more comfortable, you are just unnecessarily increasing energy consumption.
And besides, it's not good for your health.
20% of colds and sick leave in summer are caused by a combination of a dry environment (less than 30% humidity) and a low indoor temperature with a difference of more than 10º compared to the outside.
Avoid problems and take the opportunity to wear light, loose-fitting clothing and breathable fabrics and give yourself the pleasure of airing your feet by working in flip flops.

Clean the filters of A/C appliances
They are often forgotten and they should not be. Regular maintenance of the filters is essential for them to work properly and to prevent dust from accumulating inside the appliance, obstructing the flow of air to the outside.
And it is the air that cools the house.
Changing the filter regularly helps the appliance to work more efficiently and will extend its useful life.
Double saving.
- Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest
A simple ceiling fan can be enough to keep you nice and comfortable.
A warm shower, about 30º refreshes more than a cold one (below 25º).
And if you're going into the kitchen, the best idea is to prepare delicious cold dishes or use the microwave.
The hobs and especially the oven will really raise the temperature in the kitchen (and your bill to cool it down again).
Fancy a nice cool gazpacho?
