How to choose the fan that best suits your home

The summer is here and the heat affects our homes and our workplaces. In fact, I bet you are in front of the computer fanning yourself with anything you can lay your hands on. Put it down and switch on your fan.

Although it is hard to believe, fans are no longer just those small, white and terribly noisy electrical appliances that used to be placed in the middle of the living room. The industry has experienced a real revolution in recent years and fan designs have progressed so much that they are now basic decorative items in any home... And the envy of your guests!

Furthermore, these devices are made with top-quality materials which, very often are environmentally friendly too. There are many different types of fans: ceiling, desk, tower… Every room, every space or every home requires a particular type, therefore at Endesa we want to help you if you are thinking of choosing one to cool off during these months.

What room should I condition?

Put your wallet away! Before throwing your money away, you should measure the room in which you are going to install the fan, you don’t want the fan taking up half the room do you? And then there’s no room for you… Therefore, the fan should be larger or smaller, depending on how big or small the room is.
If you are planning to have a ceiling fan, you should consider the height of the room, as it should be safe while also accessible for maintenance tasks.

Choose a fan in accordance with the style of your room

Think about how you want to decorate the room or what type of fan would suit the style you have already defined. There is a vast range of fans on offer today, including classic models and modern models, offering an avant-garde look and fresh designs... in every sense of the word.

Types of fans

You will also have to choose the type of fan you want or the one that best suits your requirements:

  • Tower fans. The main advantage, apart from providing fresh air, of course, is that it gives the room a decorative touch. Particularly steel designs, a very popular material in interior design at the moment.
  • Ceiling fans. The ideal place for these fans is the bedroom or the living room. You must be very careful when installing them as, depending on the material used and the weight of them, it can turn out to be an extremely difficult task. Therefore, you should ideally get a professional to install the fan.
In terms of how they work, you will find fans with little strings that you pull for them to start or stop rotating, more sophisticated devices, with the control panel installed in the wall to control the speed and remotely controlled fans.
  • Desk fans. These are perhaps the ones most seldom used, but if your home has a slight retro or very modern look, this could be the ideal option for decorating your rooms. Basically, you have a whole host of possibilities to choose from: wood, steel, varied colours... Another advantage is that they are very manageable and perfect for small spaces such as your computer desk or small office.
  • Tower fans. Generally, these fans are slim and vertical. They are marvellous for placing in that empty corner you have been trying to fill or in smaller rooms. In addition, the blades are protected by a guard, which makes them safer for children or animals.

Precautions when installing a fan at home

This aspect is very often not taken into account, but that is why we are here. With ceiling fans, you should be very careful with the blade size. The size you choose does not solely depend on the area you want to cool, they should also be maintained at a minimum distance of 50 centimetres from any lateral obstacle and at least two metres from the floor.

In this regard, the most common diameters are 75, 106, 122 and 132 centimetres. Bear in mind that, for a 15-square metre room or more, you are going to need a fan measuring at least 106 centimetres in diameter. Although, as you can imagine, the number of blades is also relevant: the more blades, the more breeze. Elementary, my dear Watson.

Fan or air conditioning?

Fans are a good alternative to air conditioning when only used sporadically. If you don't think you will be using your air conditioning very often, fans will become your new best friends. However, if you use fans very often or you think you will be using them over a longer period of times, perhaps it is wise to change to air conditioning.
