5 habits that are wasting energy in your home
You are losing kilowatts hour as if you didn’t have a care in the world, but then you complain when your energy consumption goes up on your bill. What did you expect, when you have the heating on full power so you can wear your underwear in the house and so much air conditioning on that you need to wear a sweater?
It is too late to complain about modern living. The addiction to new technologies is here to stay. But it is also here to help us cut down on unnecessary expenses.
We barely realise it, but all of us waste about 10% of all the energy used. Look in the mirror: how much are you wasting? When? Are you an exemplary citizen? Is there not room for improvement?
You will find answers on our Customer Private Area. You just need to enter your username and password. If you still haven't registered, what are you waiting for?
1. Using the heating or air conditioning like there’s no tomorrow
You will have to sneak a look in the mirror if you are one of those that leave the heating and air conditioning on when you are not at home. Well why not? as the heating “only” accounts for 47% and air conditioning for 18% of the total energy expense in your home…
Is there any sense in walking about your house in January in your beach clothes? And catching a cold in August because your living room feels like you are in Norway?
Stop wasting money: set the thermostat at a reasonable temperature (around 20º in winter for heating and around 26º in summer for air conditioning).
2. You switch on the lights when the sun is still shining
Spain is one of the countries with the most hours of sunshine per year; get those blinds up, open the curtains and smile.
In interior rooms, only switch on the light when you are in them and switch them off when you go out. If you are too lazy, install photoelectric sensors that will switch on when you walk by and switch off after a short while.
3. Leaving your computer on all day
People for some reason believe that computers do not consume much energy, but this is not true: if you leave them on while they are not being used it accounts for 1.6% of the total amount of electricity consumed in your household.
Switch your computer off if you are not going to be using it for more than 30 minutes. Leaving it switched on is a waste of money and you will overheat the machine and wear it out unnecessarily.
4. Almost empty wash loads
Unless your washing machine is equipped with an adjustable load, do us all a favour (and yourself), fill it up and use moderate or low temperatures (almost all the energy is used in heating up the water).
Putting a wash on for a few socks and a couple of T-shirts is an absolute waste of money. Change the chip: only use it when you need to and only during the cheaper hours. How? With Endesa’s Tempo Happy Tariff you can decide when your electricity consumption costs you 0 euros per kWh.
5. Everything plugged in the whole time
If you are one of those that never unplugs the television or the microwave… or the terminal strip on your multiple plugs, you are on the wrong track. The sum of all the devices with the little red light on accounts for between 7% and 11% of your household’s total electricity consumption.
"Change all these bad habits that waste energy and make sure everyone else does too."
