We already know that in the kitchen you will find one of the domestic appliances cost the most with regard to our bill: The fridge. This appliance is responsible for almost a third of consumption. It is closely followed by the washing machine, and it accounts for 11.8% of the consumption for all the appliances. And in third place there is the cooker, with 8.3% of the total consumption of the domestic appliances in the home.

But there are other domestic appliances in the kitchen that consume very little, and this can help to discover other ways of cooking which are much more efficient.

Kitchen appliances with low consumption

Coffee pod machines

In recent decades they have become one of the most common appliances in kitchens around the world. They originated in the Italian espresso coffee machine, which inspired Nestlé brand engineers to create a machine that used capsules that emulated how coffee is made in Italy. In the beginning it was marketed for catering companies and hotels, but in the 1990s it was made available on the domestic market as a luxury product.

The advantage of coffee pod machines is that they provided freshly made coffee to taste, but they are very clean. Even though they require a lot of power, in the region of 1,500W, if you only make a couple of coffees a day it consumes 12 kWh a month.

Electric coffee maker

Another option for coffee drinkers is the electric coffee maker. It was invented at the end of the 1950s, and uses electricity to make it easier to prepare coffee.

If there are a number of people at home who drink coffee it is a good option. To make a single pot of coffee maker it consumes about 30 kWh per month, but depending on the size if the cup it can serve between 6 and 8 coffees. These appliances usually require a power of between 700W and 1,000W.

Electric kettle

If you prefer tea to coffee, an electric kettle is the best option. This type of appliance is very common in countries where they drink a lot of infusions, like the United Kingdom. But they are gradually becoming popular in Spain.

For a 2,400W electric kettle that you use once a day, it will consume 30kWh a month.

Toasted sandwich maker

A toasted sandwich maker is a very common small appliance that prepares toasted sandwiches in a just few minutes. It was invented in the first quarter of the last century and has undergone significant development: Now you can find toasted sandwich makers that can also prepare waffles and even be used as a grill.

To make a couple of sandwiches or grilled sausages a day, this appliance will consume 27 kWh per month, if you take into account that the power ranges between 700W and 1,200W.

Air fryer

More and more people are using air fryers in Spain. It is a healthy and fast way to cook which opens numerous possibilities: From quickly heating up something that was fried the day before, to cooking delicious dishes, including pastries. Although it was invented in 1940, it was only in the last decade that it was presented as a domestic appliance and it immediately became popular throughout the world.

If you use an air fryer for about 15 minutes a day it will consume 7.5 kWh, taking into account that it has a power of between 1,000W y 1,800W.

Toaster

This is another classic domestic appliance and has been used since the beginning of the last century to prepare healthy breakfasts quickly.

With a power of 1,000 W there is a monthly consumption of 15 kWh if it is only used for a few minutes a day.

Blender

The blender is one of the most commonly used small domestic appliances. Sauces, purées, dough, etc. There are so many recipes that require the use of a blender, which was launched as a product in the 1940s.

As an example we will take a blender with a power of 1,000W. If you use it for 3 minutes two days a week, consumption will be 1.4 kWh per month.

Liquidiser

People who opt for a healthy diet frequently use a liquidiser because it is ideal for making juices, smoothies and fruit and vegetable slushies. The advantages are that it is clean, fast and easy to use, making it a very useful complement.

A liquidiser with a power of 600W used daily to make a juice will generally have a monthly consumption of 0.8 kWh.

The Top 3 kitchen appliances that consume less

And with these options, we reach the Top 3 kitchen appliances that consume less:

Yoghurt maker

This is one of the appliances that have made a return to our kitchens. Popularised in the 1980s, the yogurt maker is a healthy, easy way to make our own yogurt and it is in third place in the ranking of kitchen appliances that consume less.

If you use a yogurt maker with a power of 18W once a week, monthly consumption will be 0.5 kWh.

Electric juicer

The electric juicer is in second place in the ranking of kitchen appliances that consume less. Since the 1940s this appliance has been used to extract the juice from citrus fruits using a combination of rotary movement and pressure.

With a power of 150W, it uses 0.4 kWh a month, providing you only make one juice per day.

Coffee grinder

The coffee grinder is the kitchen appliance that consumes the least. The most demanding coffee drinkers prefer to use freshly ground coffee beans. Manual coffee grinders date back several centuries but in the 1940s, they began to market electric models that simplified the process.

If you choose an electric coffee grinder with a power of 180W and you grind coffee once a week, it will consume 0.03 kWh.
