How to regulate your electric heating to stay warm and avoid unwanted surprises

If you have electric heating at home, you need to follow a series of recommendations to secure its cost-effective and efficient use. This way you will avoid unwanted surprises on your bills and you will not need to hide yourself under blankets.

When the cold bites, the same old debate resurfaces: is electric or gas heating better? If you are one of those who have already committed to the electrical solution, this is not a priority debate for you. What you are thinking about is how to take advantage of the heating you have already installed.

How to ensure a healthy home climate.

Before getting to the heart of the matter of how to regulate your electric heating, you should follow three general pieces of advice that will look after your pocket and your health:

  1. Temperature: neither your health nor your pocket will thank you for putting the heating up too much. In the middle of winter, what you want to do is dress relatively warmly at home so that you can live comfortably with a temperature that does not exceed 21ºC. In addition, in bedrooms it is possible (and advisable) that the temperature is maintained at around 18ºC, which is ideal overnight and also if there is no one at home for a few hours. (If, on the other hand, there is not going to be anyone at home for several days, the best thing to do, in effect, is to switch off your home to stop spending.
  2. Radiators: it is essential to choose the best type of radiator for your circumstances. Whichever type you choose, never cover them with wet clothes. Although it may seem convenient to dry your clothes like that, what you are doing is penalizing your heating's performance and increasing its consumption and your bill.
  3. Ventilation and insulation: even on the coldest of days, it is mandatory to ventilate your home. Every day, 10 minutes. It is essential to avoid the accumulation of gases and humidity. When you air it out, turn off the heating. If you have blinds, lower them at night and keep them totally up during the day (you will take advantage of the heat that enters with the sun's rays).
“Your house does not need to be at more than 21 degrees during the winter. And in bedrooms, you can leave it at 18 degrees.”

This is how to regulate your electric heating

The importance of spending only what you need is summed up by a convincing fact: each extra degree Celsius that you increase your heating by, will mean 7% more energy consumption. The more you consume, the more you will pay on your bill.

  1. Where to place the radiators: quick and easy answer. The best thing you can do is place them under the windows. In this way, a better distribution of hot air will be encouraged. You must ensure that radiators are free from obstacles, and that furniture or long curtains are not covering or too near them.
  2. How to regulate them in terms of times of the day: just use common sense. It seems easy, but the reality is that many homes ignore a basic rule: your heating should work especially when you are at home. If you are going to leave in a few minutes, if you are not going to be at home for a few hours (or days), if you are going to be sleeping under a duvet, etc., it is not necessary to maintain a temperature of 21 degrees.

Fortunately, there are electricity rates on the market that will help you save on your electric heating. These are rates that adapt to your consumption. Put yourself in the following situations:

  1. You spend little time at home and most of the heat you need is always for 2 consecutive hours at dusk, while you are preparing dinner.
  2. The bulk of your heating consumption is on Sunday, when you like to stay at home all day.
  3. You don't have a fixed routine and every week it changes, although as in any home there are 50 hours a month during which you spend more on heating than during all the other hours.

For all these cases, there is an electricity tariff that offers you free consumption hours. Whatever you spend during those hours, you will not pay anything. If you are interested in knowing more, click on the following button:
