Installing an electric heater in your home: types and questions
When your heating at home is just not enough to dispel the cold creeping in from outside, electric heaters are a quick and easy solution. They are cheap, easy to set up, and can heat a space up very quickly. Here we explain which type of heater is best for you.
Deciding outright which is the best type of heater is simply impossible. It all depends on what you want to use it for.
If you plan to use electricity as a source of heating in your home, it is important to be aware of the different options that are available to you:
Low consumption radiators
Low-consumption heaters contain fluid that has greater thermal inertia than water. This means that when you turn it off, it takes longer to cool down than a normal radiator.
The drawback is that when you turn a low-consumption heater on, it takes longer for the whole room to warm up than with other solutions.
- Recommended for: slow, moderate heating for long periods of time.
Battery-powered
Ideal when you want to save on your electricity bills, as you can make use of the off-peak vs. peak-time distinction.
You can set these heaters up to store heat during certain times and release it at other times (normally: store it at night, and release it during the hours you are going to be at home).
- Recommended for: homes where you can survive for a few hours without the heating on (for example: at night-time, or when you are out).
Oil radiators
Also known as thermo-electric heaters, oil heaters contain a fluid, and are heater by an electrical resistor. Thanks to this, the temperature they produce is stable, smooth and is distributed evenly throughout the heater.
Often, oil heaters are included with low-consumption heaters, as they continue to give off heat even when switched off.
- Recommended for: moderate heating for long periods of time.
“The ideal partner for electric storage heaters is time-based charging (whereby electricity costs vary depending on the time of day). Heaters of this type must be combined with this type of tariff.”
Dry radiators
Dry electric heaters or dry thermal radiators are designed for rooms that need to be heated very quickly.
The good thing about them is that when they are switched on, they heat up very rapidly. The flip-side to this is that when they are switched off, the temperature drops sharply and the heat disappears.
It is very important to bear in mind that they only emit heat for a limited period of time, so it only makes sense to use them if we are not going to spend long periods of time in that room.
- Recommended for: relatively well-insulated rooms where we do not spend a great deal of time.
Quartz heaters
Quartz heaters heat rooms by means of infrared radiation. Thus, they can be used to heat things at short range. However, they do not heat the air, but objects around them.
One of the benefits is that they do not dry out the atmosphere and preserve the balance between relative humidity, temperature and air movement.
- Recommended for: small rooms, such as the bathroom.
The trick: concentrating the heat in a few hours
If you have opted to buy an electric heater, you ought to know that this is a particularly sustainable choice when it comes to maintaining a comfortable temperature at specific times.
Put differently: it is not advisable to use electric heaters if you want a temperature of 21ºC for 24 hours a day.
If you are able to concentrate the expense during certain specific times of day (whatever those times may be), then we recommend combining electric heaters and the Tempo Tariffs. It has two modes, and they are all suited for your needs:
- Choose two hours a day when you pay nothing for your electricity consumption.
- Choose one day a week when you pay nothing for your electricity consumption.
It all depends on your lifestyle, but whichever option you go for, this deal will save you money.
