How to unregister a service after a death
Losing a loved one is a difficult experience we all undergo at some point in our lives, but when they are gone, life goes on and we have to carry out certain procedures to regularise the new situation. Dealing with electricity and gas contracts is usually the first thing that comes to mind.
Unregistering the utilities of a deceased person is usually not an easy task for family, friends and relatives, either emotionally or bureaucratically. The last thing you expect in this harrowing process is to encounter administrative barriers that make it even more difficult, but they may exist.
To avoid such obstacles and make the procedure as painless as possible, you can read the following information:
Change of contract holder or definitive unregistration?
First we need to be clear about what we want to do with these utilities contracts.
We have the option of unregistering them or changing the contract holder. Although these options may seem similar, they are not the same and have different consequences, so you need to know what option is best for you.
Although it may seem obvious, it is important to remember that requesting an unregistration implies the cessation of the supply so the house or premises will no longer be supplied with electricity or gas.
This means that if you wish to re-register for the gas or electricity supply in a few months' time, you will have to pay for the reconnection of the service.
"To set up the electricity in a house that has been inactive for less than 3 years costs between 77 and 190 euros depending on the power contracted, not including the possible cost of the electricity certificate."
However, a change of contract holder does not imply "disconnecting" the power supply, but simply transferring its ownership. Changing the contract holder will enable you to maintain the supply to the house, thus avoiding the inconvenience of having to reconnect it and incur unnecessary expenses in the future.
In summary...
- If you are sure that the house will be closed for a long period of time, you can cancel the supply.
- If the house is going to be transferred, someone is going to come and live in it or it is going to be closed for a relatively short period of time, it will be sufficient simply to change the owner.
If you finally decide to change contract holder because you do not know how long the home will remain unoccupied, you can reduce the power supply so you can still have electricity but reduce your energy costs. Remember that to carry out this procedure and reduce your power, you must be the contract holder, so you will have to request it after making the change.
How to change the contract holder with Endesa
A change of holder is made via contractual subrogation, and the procedure can be undertaken both personally in the office and through our video customer service.
This means that the previous contract will be applied to the new holder and that he/she will acquire the status of holder.
To do this, you will be asked to provide the following documents:
- Name, surnames, tax ID and contact telephone number.
- Death certificate.
- Details for the supply point.
- Current account for bill payment by direct debit.
How to cancel a contract with Endesa
If you finally decide not to change the contract holder, the contract cancellation procedures are as follows:
- You need to have the death certificate and the necessary documentation at hand (the deceased person's data, supply point data, etc).
- A request should be submitted at an Endesa office or service point or through our online video customer service channel.
How much does it cost to cancel a contract?
The cancellation process is free of charge. When you make the request, the supply point becomes inactive and stops generating expenses. However, when it needs to be reactivated, you will need to request a connection, and this procedure does incur a charge.
You also need to bear in mind that a final contract cancellation bill will be issued, which serves as a regularisation from the last bill until the day the contract is cancelled.
Remember that you can contact us through any of our customer service channels if you have any doubts or queries.
