This year, Burgos Cathedral will use interior artistic lighting for the first time in the chapels and liturgical spaces that will become an immersive experience of light, sound and video-mapping. Endesa and the Endesa Foundation are developing this multimedia project, called 'Stella', which will provide an explanation of Burgos Cathedral without resorting to overly theological concepts, within the commemorative acts of its VIII Centenary.
This morning, the chapel of the Constables of the Gothic temple hosted the signing of the agreement between the Endesa Foundation, Endesa Energy and Endesa X, with the Cathedral's VIII Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021. The event was attended by José Bogas, Endesa's Chief Executive Officer, and Javier Blanco, general director of the Endesa Foundation; Mario Iceta and Antonio Miguel Méndez Pozo, president and vice president of the Cathedral's VIII Centenary Foundation. Burgos 2021, respectively, and Vicente Rebollo, dean of Burgos Cathedral; Daniel de la Rosa, mayor of Burgos and Raúl Fernández Sobrino, Deputy Culture Minister of the Castile and Leon Government.
In his words to all those present at the signing of the agreement, José Bogas stressed that with this agreement Endesa "today takes another step in its commitment to be with and for the societies in which we carry out our activities. This initiative joins many others in the cultural or sporting area. Initiatives that always seek to respond with responsibility, purpose and empathy to activities and events of enormous importance for many people. Burgos and its cathedral are unfailingly united. They represent the spirit and character of their people and both remind us that the future is only conquered by knowing and preserving the legacy of the past".
For his part, Mario Iceta thanked Endesa "for its sensitivity in collaborating with a World Heritage Site to ensure a night visit and put into action new sustainable more environmentally-friendly lighting technologies. It is also a commitment to Burgos that will further increase the recognition of the cathedral and that will boost the city's economic and social climate. Thanks to this involvement, many will be able to enjoy this monument both nationally and internationally"
‘Stella’ shall be an immersive lighting and video-mapping experience, especially designed for several of the Cathedral's chapels and liturgical spaces, consisting of artistic lighting that will accentuate different heritage items and assets in order to highlight the Cathedral's artistic and architectural richness through special and sensorial effects. All of this is completed with an emotional soundtrack that will accompany the rhythm of the narration, accentuating the most outstanding and spiritual moments of the dramatisation.
A permanent experience that aims to be a different way of getting to know Burgos Cathedral, to understand its meaning as a space and to listen to its message and feel its spirit. 'Stella' proposes a discourse based on the powerful visual narrative offered by light, with scenes in the Presentation and Santa Ana chapels, the Golden Staircase, the Constable chapel, the main altarpiece and the central nave, with the dome as the central axis and final point on the route.
Thus, that 'Stella' of light will be the one that illuminates the most important historical and artistic moments that took place in the naves, chapels and altars of the temple; it radiates the personality of some of its ecclesiastical leaders (bishops and canons); reflects the permanent presence of its local and pilgrim parishioners and makes the noble civil promoters shine, who paid for some of the most significant artistic works of the Gothic and the Spanish Renaissance.
These nocturnal visits will have two daily passes, for groups of around thirty people, and they will last around one hour, with audio guides translated into five languages. It will have the latest technology for video-mapping and audio-visual techniques, with video projectors with laser technology. In addition, it will be a carbon-neutral experience with responsible consumption, of only 1024W for 15K lumens.
Endesa Energy will be responsible for this project's electricity supply, which has been designed and will be technically executed by Endesa X, Endesa's subsidiary dedicated to digital and innovative services, including public and artistic lighting. The Cathedral celebrates its VIII Centenary in 2021, which is also the Jacobean Holy Year This coincidence converts Burgos into an obligatory visit for tourists and pilgrims. This double anniversary means that the Cathedral's commemoration acquires greater force in the city's tourist campaigns. Endesa and its Foundation, aware of the significance and repercussion of this historical celebration, want to join the commemorative programme by participating in the revitalisation and projection of this exceptional monument through the development of a spectacular and attractive cultural proposal.
