- Endesa X was awarded the tender made by the University of Granada to replace part of its energy supply with a clean and renewable source.
- This will involve Endesa X installing in a number of buildings in the University of Granada a 2.65 MWp photovoltaic plant that will provide 27.4% of the annual consumption in these buildings.
- This will enable the University of Granada to avoid the emission into the atmosphere of 1,044 tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of planting 6,252 trees.
- Endesa X provides innovative solutions that support energy transition for its customers, turning the objectives of decarbonisation and electrification into beneficial activities that make our society better.
Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, has been awarded the tender held by the University of Granada (UGR) for the installation of 9 self-consumption photovoltaic solar plants in a number of centres, which is an important milestone in its energy transition process and a firm commitment to renewable, local energy generation located in its own installations.
This was announced this morning at an event held at the rectorate of the University and with the participation of the Head of the UGR, María del Mar Holgado and Endesa X's Public Administrations Manager, Juan Garrigosa.
The corresponding contract includes the installation by Endesa X of a total of 9 photovoltaic solar plants capable of generating a total of 2.65 MWp of power, which will cover 27.4% of the total energy needs for a number of centres in the University of Granada. These actions will be undertaken specifically in the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Sport Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the E.T.S. of Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, the ETS of Building Engineering, the ETS of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Education Sciences and the PTS (Faculty of Medicine and General Services Building).
These self-consumption installations will produce 4,175 MWh annually, which will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 1,044 tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of planting 6,252 trees. This will make the University of Granada more efficient and sustainable.
For the Head of the University of Granada, María del Mar Holgado, actions of this type are aimed at achieving the objectives of improving environmental sustainability included in the government programme, which on this occasion, consists of substantially reducing the energy resources consumed as a result of university activity. "This is not the only type of measure the University of Granada needs to undertake because of its direct impact on the environment. Actions of this nature can also have an important impact on society as a whole and, therefore, on the environment, as can be seen from the evident leadership that this institution has assumed within its territory, exemplifying and raising awareness among the university community and citizens in general that the implementation of an environmental sustainability strategy that is not only desirable, but also socially and economically viable", the Head of the UGR pointed out.
For Juan Garrigosa, Manager of Public Administrations at Endesa X, "self-consumption solutions of the type offered by Endesa X are a very viable alternative for public entities to be able to undertake their decarbonisation process without extra economic expense and with a considerable result with regard to the reduction of their ecological footprint and their energy consumption invoices. To achieve this, Endesa X makes use of its comprehensive knowledge of the energy sector, the latest technology and the support of a solid company that guarantees a successful result to support universities on the road towards sustainability".
To eliminate part of the ecological footprint of the University of Granada, the investment planned for the installation of more than 4,900 photovoltaic modules that will be located in the different faculties will be €1.9 million.
Work on the installation of the equipment that will enable this project to be launched will begin next summer and the start-up of photovoltaic solar production will take a maximum of 2 years.
This project is possible due to a novel formula by which the University of Granada does not need to provide any initial investment, with Endesa X assuming the cost of installing the photovoltaic plant for self-consumption and thus enabling the university to assign its resources to other initiatives.
In this type of contract, a fixed price associated with the energy produced by the self-consumption installations is established and Endesa X will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and exploitation of the installed infrastructure during the 10 years of the contract. This type of agreement will enable the University of Granada to increase its level of certainty about part of its energy costs for the duration of the contract.
From then on, the UGR will fully manage the two installations and will continue working on the road to becoming increasingly sustainable.
This is the third agreement of this type that Endesa X has reached with an Andalusian public university, following the installation of a self-consumption plant on the campus of the University of Jaén and the award of the tender published by the Pablo de Olavide University of Seville.
Energy supply, also with Endesa
In order to cover the rest of the energy that the University needs to undertake its activity, the UGR, through the REDEJA contract with the Regional Government of Andalusia, has an agreement with the Endesa group's retailer, Endesa Energía, involving the supply of almost 11 GWh per year.
